Want to stay a few weeks in vegas on the cheap....info/help needed!

I am thinking of making a trip out to Vegas in August or September and staying for a few weeks. I don't want to pay for a hotel room as it can get very expensive so I have been looking at renting a room from someone on craiglist. I am flying out and won't have a car so the closer to the strip that I am the better. What are some suggested areas to rent from that are close and does anyone have any experience renting one of these rooms for an extended period of time in Vegas.
