I recall nothing about oversized chips - and $0.25 chips were still in play then.

Also, since that time, I have never seen the need for the multi-chip rule being needed, or enforced in a cash game - which, at this point, seems curious.

In short, we all work off of our experience and small things will sometimes get missed. You're never too old to learn something new.

Fwiw I’ve been playing since the early 17th century BC when RRoP was written in hieroglyphics and I can remember this rule clearly. However the situation rarely came up because if you made an ambiguous bet then the other players were in turn allowed to confuse you per hammurabi’s code, which overruled RRoP at the time if you can believe that.

But if you never heard of this rule, never saw the need and never saw it enforced how did you know to do this? Why would an ambiguous bet be an issue? How and when did you learn this?
Good point, I suppose. All I know is that I dislike ambiguity in many forms. I also dislike waste, or buying something just to throw it away. It's possible I did encounter something like this a long time ago and it's possible it was something else. Don't know and don't really care.
