Maybe you could try not complaining to management.

Dealers prefer to blame players for low pay instead of blaming management like people with other jobs do.

Precisely. Which is exactly why employers love the tipping model. They don't have to be bothered with stuff like employee evaluations and compensation plans. They just give everyone minimum wage and leave the rest up to the employee to get in tips.

Not if the employer wants to stay in business.

I think it is a fallacy that having job X be tipped automatically forces out bad employees ("bad" in the sense that they lower profitability) while properly motivating good employees (again, "good" in the sense that they increase the business's profitability) to become excellent employees.

You still need evaluations of worker performance. It is just that they are not tied to compensation ( in many non-tipping jobs such evaluations are not major factors in compensation [firings, yes] either).

This is very true. I remember when I left AZ Charlie's and started at the Paris. The dealers said it was a mistake and "unsafe" to leave one property to go to an "unknown", like the Paris. Which in Vegas, for the unfortunate, it's sometimes true. Casinos can be brutal when they first open.

"These are suitable for the time being. Take what you want from the rest and form an "extra board". They will make good replacements in the event that one of our regular employees.. slips up.
****, the rest can hit the door."

I went from making $3ok/yr to $6Ok/yr. My point is that some people don't realize their options in life. Fear and distrust (and lack of options in some cases) can keep people in a perpetual "staticness".. too unsure to be able to think clearly (and carefully).

That and people who want things easy in life often love to blame others for what happens to them. Instead, it's more likely they've chosen to remain "static".

It's not me. It's you.

Truth is.. you got hired because you went looking for a job. Did you somehow forget how to look? No. You're just scared [and static]. Like a deer about to **** himself.

I'm only ****ing around. Everyone needs to complain sometimes. We should just be smarter and more effective when we do.

As a dealer, you certainly hear more than (what should be allowed of) your fair share of complaining.

quick estimate is ~ 1200. I just find it ironic that a winner of a $300 bounty (which first took 12k) can afford to give 1k in tips yet he who won 466k could donate $1 or anyone in that tournament for that matter. i'm done talking about it though i really dont care enough to continue

Afford shouldn't be used here. Who are you to judge what people can afford?

Maybe the guy was just stingy. Maybe he owes it all to a bank. Who knows? Chances are he's just not a very generous, sympathetic individual? Consideration isn't something you're really born with imo.

new kid in my room is in the 7 seat and in a pot with the 8 seat. i'm in the 9. the river goes check check and both players table their hands at the same time, and they're pretty messy about it. the cards roll over each other. kid in 7 has top pair, seat 8 has a busted FD. since i was right next to them, i saw their hands very clearly, but the dealer didn't. he pushed the pot to the 8 seat. kid says "whoa, i had the best hand." dealer says "oh you had the Ace? sorry about that." kid says "well i guess no tip for you buddy." ugh what a douche. i actually wouldn't care that much, but he didn't have to verbalize it and show the dealer up. i'm admittedly friendly with all the dealers and know them by name. this dealer is one of the good ones so i say "first day, huh?" and since i'm right next to his tip box, i drop a chip in it very discreetly. he just smiles and nods. kid says "what's that all about?" i said "xxxx is my favorite dealer." then i made sure that every down that night i said "oh it's xxxx he/she is my favorite dealer..."

You think he showed the dealer up so you respond by showing the player up?

Rightly or wrongly, the player felt the dealer messed up on the river and has the right to not tip. It's not your pot, stay out of it IMO.

lol at tipping advice coming from the brits (j/k)

like i said, if he doesn't tip for that hand, i wouldn't have done anything. but he just had to announce it, like the rest of the table didn't know the dealer already made the mistake. he had already apologized ffs. just withhold your tip and move on. kid didn't have to be an ass about it. on top of that, i was discreet about the tip until the kid said something to me. i hardly showed him up.

and who cares who's pot it is? pretty sure i can tip a dealer for w/e i want.

Obviously not discreet enough m8, otherwise the kid wouldn't have noticed.

I dunno, it just doesn't sit well with me - be interested to see what others think.

Really? Its the dealers fault that they co mingled that hands? How about the players just table their hand correctly.

exactly. its not the dealers job to turn over hands and say "you sir have this card, and this card, let me place them over here right in front of you face up so we know it belongs to you."

Its the players responsibility if the cards go all over the place. If I was the dealer I would have just said "please table your hands a little more careful next time. I don't want to send the pot to the wrong player and i'm not sure which cards belong to who" then the players can say what they had but if they got mixed up its not my fault or any other dealers faults either.

I really have zero idea what this has to do with what I said, which was that the dealer is at his job while he's at the table while the player isn't in 99.5% of cases. If you are one of the infinitesimal %age of people who are playing 1/2 or 2/5 NL for a long term living then I guess my statement wouldn't apply to you, but it would to just about everyone else playing low to medium stakes poker at a casino. The dealer is working, those people aren't, they're there for recreation.

It's interesting that dealers cite having to deal tournament downs as part of why they need a good tip rate the rest of the time -- but still manage to remind us that we should be tipping more on tournaments

they should, but how about the dealer does his job?
you tip for service and the service sucked

honestly some dealers just think they should get money for sitting in the box
i have no problem tipping them when they do their job well, i have even tipped great dealers on downs where i didnt win a hand, but i'm not going to tip someone just for showing up and spacing out

Explain to me , where or how in the OP this became the dealers fault and that his service sucked?
It appears he did his job as well as he could considering the fact that the PLAYERS did not table the hands correctly.
Sure the pot almost got pushed the wrong way, but it wasn't because he spaced out.

Did i mention the players didn't table their hands correctly and co mingled their cards?

If the dealer is looking at the players while they table their hands following which player tabled which cards (it is only 4 cards) shouldn't be too difficult.

Maybe the OP can come back and clarify this, otherwise we're all guessing, but maybe the dealer is one of those who is constantly looking everywhere but his/her own table.

It's a pet peeve of mine and I'm sure we've all seen it, the dealer equivalent of Colin Montgomerie who hears every sound around the room and has to look around and see what it is

We're not really tipping for the service per se. We're tipping to make up the salaries that we're not already covering with $12 per hour per person rake.

I mean, yeah, they provide a service, and we tip them -- but we rarely do it based on anything other than the custom.

So, sure, we're paying the casino for a service, getting that service, and then paying more for the service in a wink-wink-nod tax in the form of tipping a buck on most pots.

...but to suggest we're (generally) tipping based on the quality of service -- that's laughable.

We're just here to pay the salaries twice.

You say the same thing, in rearranged words, every 5 or 6 posts.

I don't like tipping. I feel like I'm forced into tipping. I'm not cheap and neither is anyone who hates tipping.

I understand you perfectly.

There's two groups in this thread - those who drop in, stay a while, and then depart, and those like us who keep visiting.

I suspect the later group has a pretty firm grasp on the views of everyone else in that group.

I'm mostly replying for (a) the benefit of those people who only read the last few pages, and (b) because I like the sound of the klickity-klak of my keyboard and the warm soothing glow of my monitor.

----

ARRRRRRRGH!!!!

And the reason my post only says what you see below is because it was stealth edited/deleted AGAIN to remove details of some other tipping I did while in Vegas this weekend -- mostly to provide some sort of comparison contrast to what happens when I'm at a poker table. Things I tipped out of custom, out of habit, was forced to tip (large parties), and the things I gave voluntarily when service was good.

Apparently, it wasn't deemed germane enough and was summarily deleted without so much as a comment.
