For 1/2 games, what do you guys think about tipping the dealer with 1$ chips from my pocket? Is it worth it?

Pro: Have more money on the table
Con: Table may view me as a serious player

I think you're safe; serious players don't have white chips anywhere on their person.

Of course the dealer should acknowledge a tip, but for those that say they should always say thank you, I disagree. If someone just won a decent sized pot that means someone else, who the dealer doesn't want to annoy, lost a big pot. I'm fine with it if the dealer just gives me a quick but silent nod.

I'm probably one of the most (overly) sensitive guys at the poker table, a lot of things can get to me, but I can't imagine ever getting upset because the dealer said thank you to a player who won a big pot off me and then tipped him. Really can't imagine anyone getting upset about that.

How about a $200k pot?

I don't think dealers dealing typical games of regular stakes need to worry about offending anyone by saying thank you.

Was just sharing a story I read a while ago. It does directly relate to the post I quoted.

Sorry to derail you from the "Dealer saying thank you thread." Perhaps mods could change name.

Nah, it's all relative to the games you're playing. I've been involved in hands where I've lost several thousand in a limit game and I've never gotten angry or upset at the dealer when he/she gave the winner of the pot a simple "thank you." One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Mind you, I don't really care for it when dealers make a big over the top fuss when someone overtips, just a quiet and professional "thank you" is all that's needed imo, but nonetheless I know why dealers do this sometimes and it doesn't bother me; its the least of my worries at that point.

I wasn't being snarky...I thanked you and did enjoy reading the article. I just pointed out that I don't think it should make any dealers not say thank you.

the story has to be about Sammy Farha who's easily a top 5 dealer abuser of all time, no reason to get carried away

Question.... What is a usual dealer tip for winning a "high hand" bonus of $500?

How many hands did the dealer miss out on while you were getting paid out? That and maybe a couple bucks more if he/she is a good dealer.

I probably wouldn't tip for winning high hand. Already tipped on the pot I won.

$5-20 depending on how much I like the dealer.

Rapini, I think you misread the question.

Nobody's asking what you would or would not tip. The question was what the usual tip is for winning a high hand. In SoFla, it is usually 10%. In fact, in all the time I've played down here, I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've witnessed someone give less than that.

I gave less than $60 twice in about one week so I'll guess you are exaggerating.

In SoFla? Where exactly would that be?

More importantly, your response is absolutely meaningless without stating how much the high hands were. If they were each $600 or less (which is what the vast majority of high hands are in SoFla), then you've just helped to make my point anyway.

What about when you hit a high hand but you need to wait 2 hours to get paid to make sure it holds up? I recall winning a $300 high hand promo before and having to wait like 2-3 hours to actually get paid for it. By that point the dealer had left, so I left no tip (it didn't really cross my mind to leave a tip). But I guess I could have went out of my way to find out who the dealer was (I didn't even remember his name though) and asked the floor to hold it for him until tomorrow? *I did tip him the normal $1-2 since I won the pot though.

I've had this happen before. I took a walk around the room and found him, then gave him the tip. If I hadn't found him I don't think I'd have taken it further than that, but I'd tip him extra the next time he dealt to me.

That's really high. So I guess "average" greatly depends on where you play.
