Seemed to me that the angle he was shooting was to elicit a reaction from slooooowwwwly pretending to call without actually calling.

I was more confused by "I let one hand drop to audibly hit the felt." Is this a commonly accepted tell for a strong hand?

Mike Caro says when you want a call and it looks like you won't get one, you may as well knock over a stack of chips or anything else to provoke curiosity. Is this reversing that for someone aware of that tell?

If it is well understood what constitutes action, his misleading body language is no more an angle than your fake tell (that is to say, neither one is an angle). Fron what you described, his actions were actions that were meant to represent he was preparing to call or intending to call, not actually simulating a call.

I cut out calling chips all the time in an effort to get a tell (I play in a betting line room, where cutting out chips would not ever be considered action, unlike the OP in this thread). That is really no different than moving bets towards the line

I also don't understand your talk of "counting behind your stack". What players should be doing is "counting behind their cards".

It's very easy - chips should be on the rail, cards should be well in front of your chips, where everyone can see them. You count / play with your chips as much as you'd like to do behind your cards while you are thinking. Then when you have finished, you grab the correct number of chips (or even better, state the amount), then move those chips forward. Voila, you have now made a bet!
For the life of me, I don't understand why half the poker population spends so much time playing with their chips, counting out "bets" they don't plan to make, etc.

Literally the only time you should touch your chips should be to bet them, and you should either move the amount you are betting forward or announce the amount of your bet. Then you never get into these sorts of situations.
