Talking during a decision allowed? Talking during a decision allowed?

I was playing in a live tourney couple days ago at my local casino, won't go into details about the hand pretty standard x/c x/c then I checked on river, guy made a pretty small bet and I was faced with a decision. I made a comment saying 'that's a pretty small bet, you value betting top pair? I can't beat that' and the dealer told me I wasn't allowed to talk during a hand even though it was me the decision was on. Is this normal? I've been out of the live game for a while, so can't really remember if this is actually allowed or not, thought it was interesting though.

I mean i'm no Will Kassouf but I like to talk at the table, socialise a little etc maybe try and get a tell or 2 as well, surely it should be allowed?

If it was the other way around, other guy had a decision to make and I was talking during it then yeah that makes sense I guess?

Spoiler:
I ended up calling and he did show top pair - i'm such a ****ing calling station

It's casino dependent.

Some rooms allow table talk in heads-up spots others don’t.

Room dependent for sure. Some rooms don't allow it unless one Player is all-in already. Enforcement will vary from cash to tournament as well. GL

When the decision is on you, I think saying/implying your own hand value is usually the tipping point. In your case, you said you can't beat top pair, and the dealer stopped you. If the decision is on an opponent, overtly talking could be taken as 'influencing action' and potentially a penalty.

I'm mainly talking from my own experiences/observation though.

Typically during multi-table tournaments depending on the casino, you have more restrictions on table talk, showing hands, etc, even if you are heads-up. The premise is that you're not really heads-up, because you're playing against everyone else in the tournament. I've never issued any kind of penalty for it though, just a "don't do it" or "don't do it again" thing.

Yeah I didn't receive a penalty or anything, dealer just told me I wasn't allowed to talk while in a hand

Should be the rule everywhere.

Because it became increasingly difficult to determine what was and wasn't acceptable table talk, often becuase of individuals like the previously mentioned Mr. Kassouf, some events have ruled that any table talk has the potential to influence action or generate a tell, and is therefore not allowable. I don't see it much in local daily tournamnts, which tend to be less rigorous in order to attract newish players, but it doesn't surprise me.

I don't like it (even though I am not a talker), as I think it is all part of the game. Guys like Jamie Gold and Kassouf have gotten a lot of hate for their use of antagonistic verbal tactics, but it was very effective for them and should be considered part of the game.

Be that as it may, it is not an uncommon rule, and if that is what your room enforces, that is what your room enforces.

Not allowed in a 3-way pot in any formal game, usually allowed heads up in cash games 'round here.

It often feels like time being wasted, so I find no problem with an anti-coffeehousing rule with the purpose of speeding up the game. I also prefer that any rule against some but not all talking err on the side of being too restrictive rather than too permissive.
