Hey all,

Been playing since Nov at a particular casino, and up until the last month things had been going pretty well. However, I've hit a bit of a downswing recently and whereas previously my win rate had been solid at 70%, I've actually lost 8/10 last sessions and according to my bankroll management app, I'm now down ~£800 at this particular casino, having booked a big loss of about £1k during my last session.

Tonight, after taking a weeks break, I returned to the casino and I was asked by the poker manager about my job, earnings, and ability to fund my casino poker gaming. He said that it had been a while since this had been asked and that they were required to ask this. I do understand that casinos are meant to, but couldn't help but think that this was triggered by my recent losses (taking me into negative territory), whereas before it wasn't asked because I was seen to be a regular winning player.

Is this likely the case? Or am I just massively overthinking it...?

Thanks for helpful opinions in advance,
J

Not familiar with UK law, but I suspect it has two causes. One maybe that they are required to make sure you're not gambling beyond your means. If you're young looking, they could think you're over your head. Or it might just be concern about you in general. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Safer gambling rules in UK casinos now. They have to ask if everything is ok etc. I had a blow out one evening in Bristol and after losing around £1500 on the table games the manager stopped me and asked the same type of questions. She was more than happy with my responses and let me carry on if I wanted to. If they think it could be a problem they can restrict you.

Standard. I've been going to my local Grosvenor for years, was stopped for the first time ever on the way in a few months ago after doing a few bullets on a comp and a couple of losing cash sessions.

Asked how much I earned and how much I was comfortable with losing in a month. Took me at my word and not heard anything since.

I did notice last year that a few regs from the cash games stopped showing up; those who, umm, looked to have unconventional income streams...

Interesting news from abroad .. would never expect to hear this in the US 'officially', and certainly not anything as specific as job/earnings. Floors/Dealers are people too and they might backdoor approach someone as more of a personal concern. I wouldn't doubt that some Players could take offense to this and stir up some dust should they feel offended.

How do they know you weren't on vacation or out of town for work? Taking a break should actually be a good sign that a Player 'knows' to do that if they feel the need.

Unless a Player has shown interest in a credit line, which would be pretty extreme for a Poker Player, I don't think the casino needs to be meddling in 'private' information.

I guess I applaud it, but I also think it's government/business potentially influencing the behavior of a 'free' citizen.

Does a car dealer ask about your job if you're paying cash for a car? They shouldn't .. unless it's actually cash I guess. Laws are laws. GL

This must be because of responsible gaming regulations in UK, and I also applaud it even though I do value freedom..

Not many people have addictions buying cars, but very many people have gamble addiction.

Yes people are addicted to everything, like buying expensive cloths on credit, but in regards to gambling, I think this all in all is a good thing.

In Norway we have underground/unregulated clubs, if these questions were asked and people would have to go through this kind of check, it would be good. At the same time they can login web and blast on slots. Its not an easy topic.
