+1, a good advice would have been, "i bet your entire stack he had less than 30%"

$1/$2 live, young smartass donk to my right and I were playing heads up after I raised PF. He checks the flop and I make an ~75% pot size continution bet with AK on a flop of Q75. Here is the exchange:

Donk: I know you've got nothing, you were betting any flop after I checked.
Hero: So raise me if you have a better hand.
Donk: You probably have an Ace which puts me at 50-50 to hit my straight.
Hero: Then you should probably call and see what the turn brings.
Donk: I know you are bluffing, but I have to fold this open ended straight draw because you might have a re-draw.....he throws JT face up into the middle.

I was then lost for words..........

Why were you lost? He had an open ended 3 straight. Much better than the gutshot 3 straight.

QFT

Sometimes you don't even win after hitting the gutshot

There's a once a month tournament at a local club near my house. Generally, I spend the first few levels explaining what the chip colors mean and explaining what hands won. Anyways, we're down to the final table and I am facing an overbet for my whole stack. I thought about it for about 30 seconds before a guy chimes in and says something I didn't hear. So I asked him to repeat it. He said "Dude, if you don't have aces just fold. Any other hand is junk, so stop wasting time." I couldn't tell if he was serious. I end up calling with top pair and OESD. Other guy flips over X,X (no pair no draw) I catch my straight. The guy that chimed in proceeds to tell the whole table how bad of a call it was for 5 minutes even after seeing the cards of the other guy.

Most of the bad poker advice in this thread is obviously coming from people who wouldn't recognize the definition of "implied odds" if it hit them in the face. That's almost understandable in that many, many people don't take the time to really study the game. But a lot of it isn't even because of that. it's just advice based on superstition and magical thinking.

guy who always buys in for the min gets bled down to 15BB or so, he limps in EP, there are a few more callers, then a 4BB raise. he folds. i ask why he did that, and he says he just wanted to limp with suited connectors to hit the bad beat, but he cant call a raise.

My favourite is my old roommate, who loves laughing and telling me "you don't get good at poker by reading books, you get good by playing".

He also has a couple beautiful nuggets of wisdom; my favourites:

"Any two cards are good before the flop"

"Go all in with A9 or higher"

"AA vs. KK is a 50/50 hand"

Had a situation taking this one step further. The guy I'm talking about lost about 2.5k playing .10/.25 and .25/.50 at my place last year once a week.

We're playing, one guy loses a huge pot and just open shoves on tilt the next few hands. I pick up KQs on the button and call (.50 BB, he's shoved to about $40 with ATC)... dumb friend in big blind is like "I don't believe you have a good hand" while staring down the guy who shoved, and calls with 75o.

My roommate was pretty drunk and goes off on him about how could he call a shove and a call with that hand, and all he responds with was "I knew [guy who initially shoved] didn't have a good hand". The fact I called the shove didn't even register in his brain.

End of story: He flops trip 7s and rivers quads.

ok? what is the problem? he had an open-ended open-ended straight draw straight draw. he had 8 outs- a 9 or a king to hit on the turn to give him the open ended straight draw. he just did some quick pot odds calculation and figured that even if he makes his straight draw on the turn, you could have a set or 2 pair and you might make a boat so therefore his draw might not be any good even if it hits on the turn. 2nd or 3rd level thinking here with him taking into consideration reverse-implied odds. i don't see why you thought this was a donk statement here. ban IMO.

Ahhhhhh.....I forgot about the reverse implied odds, my mistake....I am going feel like a fool when the kid wins the WSOP this year.

What if he was thinking on the 4th level and played his hand like he was holding 64 since he told me he was on a straight draw. If an 8 or 3 came on the turn I would have folded to a bet (only holding Ace high) and he would have looked like a genius when he turned over the cards.....missed opportunity because I sure as hell didn't put him on JT.

Hmmmmm.....perhaps I am the donk.

i think what matters is that you are at least thinking about what he thought you thought he thought you thought he thought you had. i hope that the members of 2p2 don't get mad at me for educating the fish but you seem like a nice guy.

I call backdoor draws a "trapdoor" draw. So trapdoor straight draw, trapdoor flush draw, etc

"Never limp with AA, always raise because you want the action."

"Never bet with a draw, you want to only call in case you miss, so you don't lose much money."

"I dont like to go all in preflop because I want to see what comes on the flop first".

etc

Exactly, limping with AA only ever loses money, people cant let it go when everyone limps and 8 players see the flop...

Pretty much any combination of complaining that everyone calls their bets + slowplaying big hands against the same players.
