Well I guess they have changed. When I played there in the 10/20 limit game, if, for example, you were UTG and brought out four red chips, that was a raise already, you couldn't just call. Very good rule because it speeds up the game. If I'm next to act I can go ahead and fold instead of waiting to see how much you decide to bet.

Limit and No limit could have different rules.

I wish there was no string bet rule in NL.

That is what I mostly played there, but I also played some NL, and I thought the rule was the same. I certainly never saw the California shenanigans there.

You have to have some rule otherwise a player could put out a chip, wait for everyone to act behind him and then say ... Wait I wasn't finished...

I'll amend it to I wish the string bet rule in NL was your action isn't over until you have both hands at rest outside the betting area. None of the nit-picky "the chips hit the felt before he said raise" crap.

This. When I was in Las Vegas earlier this year (am European), I got slightly tilted at times by the "limit poker" type of betting that 90% of the population do there. It definitely looks a lot like a string-bet many times.

I asked a dealer once, and basically got told that as long as a player has the chips in his/her hand that they want to bet they can proceed like described by OP - regardless of the speed of the bet.

To me that doesn't sit quite right, as the player can then look over at you while stacking the chips to get a reaction, but I accepted that's just the way they do it over there.

But if you are suggesting that taking a handful of chips over the line, dropping three stacks then bring back hand with "some" chips still in the grasp..... there is no normal. Some casinos allow this action. Some do not.

Casino where I play has the rule that if you bring in chips over the line in a NL game, all the chips stay in the pot. In a limit game, if the excess is more than half the raise amount...then it is considered a raise.
I am pretty sure that the rule where you play is that, if the excess is half or more of the raise amount, it is considered a raise.

Again, it's difficult to imagine a player who is perfectly calm and patient under one rule but spazzes out while knowingly playing by the other rule, but even if that player does exist, it's still not the purpose of the rule to protect him from his impatience.

If anything, it might affect a player such as yourself who is so used to playing under one rule that he momentarily forgets where he is. I could definitely see myself misclicking in a room that doesn't allow cutting because i've never played in such a room and I'm always shuffling a handful of chips in my right hand.
