Showdown : player shows 1 card, seems to want to muck... ruling?

Hi all,

interested in your opinions on this one.

3 clubs on board, player A goes allin, player B calls. 4th club appears on the river. Player A shows Kc4c, and player B looks dejected. Turns over the Jack of clubs, holds his cards in the air and seems to be about to flick them towards the muck. Suddenly, his neighbor player C gets really excited : "hey man, you have a straight flush!".

Chaos ensues, as player A is slightly inebriated and feels that he shouldn't have to pay the money out as according to him player B was intending to muck and hadn't opened his cards properly.

I personally believe that B was going to realize that he had his a SF, I could see he was noticing something right before his neighbor opened his big mouth, but that's besides the point.

In the end, it wasn't a huge deal because the pot was fairly small, but I can think of a variety of different scenarios where things would have gotten really really tense.

In a case like this, what is the standard procedure?

SOP is the best tabled hand wins (so assuming player B eventually tables both his cards, he wins). Player C gets a OPTAH warning, he should shut the **** up unless and until the player tables his full hand. Player A is probably going to cry about it, but that is the standard ruling.

Haha, I wonder if Angus gets a kickback every time the KITN emoji gets used.

The best hand got the pot right? Do people need the money that bad to cry that someone mucked the best hand? It's pathetic imo.

derail: this same thing happened to me once when I bluff shoved a turn, villain called and was in the process of mucking third pair with a missed straight draw after river was dealt when a third player (who I have a neg history with) grabbed her wrist, said "no, you have to show your hand!" and tabled her cards for her.

I was dealing a game where a player tabled a hand which had a Queen in it and there was a Queen on the board but their kicker didn't play. The other player folded their hand but turned over the Queen in their hand while leaving the other card face down, presumably because it was lower than the other player's kicker. I confirmed with that player that they were folding and then mucked their hand and pushed the pot. It was a high buy-in tournament so even asking for confirmation of the fold could have been problematic.

The guiding philosophy in poker should be that the best hand shown wins at showdown. Dinesh gives the best answer.

Are dealers trained to not ask for clarification when an action is ambiguous?

Dealers should ask for clarification but not in a way that could be leading.

Instead of saying "Are you going to table your other card?" a dealer is better off asking, "What is your intention?"

I’m more than happy to concede a pot at showdown to the best hand. However that other hand gets tabled is fine with me. On the other hand I keep my mouth shut when I don’t have a hand.
