Hey just a quick question. Do you guys think it would be advantageous or worth recording all my hands and how other players play certain hands?

I was thinking of recording all my live sessions to get an accurate bb/100 hands and thought maybe I can also study the way I played certain hands and get a sense of how nits/tags/fish play in general.

Worth while or waste of time?

Remember all your hands visually. If your more of a note taker , just practice , good poker pros usually can describe any hand and the action , especially if it was a game changer . I remember most of the hands I am in and just take a lot of mental notes and put it in my journal when I get home. Sometimes I don't even put it in the journal until a week later. 90% of my hands are things that I did wrong, and how to avoid them, the other 10% would be hands I played right and also tips and tricks from better players within my group

I think it's worth it to take a break every hour or two and jot down all the major hands or hands you had questions about. Also can help reduce tilt, because we tend to over-think and beat ourselves up about hands we're unsure about mid session, so it's good to get out your thoughts and then store it away for later so you can continue your session with a clear mind.

I doubt it is allowed to film in a casino?

Yeah the question of "how do you record hands" in a way that's not distracting and really annoying to you and others is a good one.

Taking notes on major hands is fine but I've seen some coaching ride along videos where the coach will spend half the time talking about hands that someone didn't play. Mostly missed squeeze opportunities and position steal opportunities. Depending on what you're doing with the hands you record these could be as important as the "major hands".

I've looked for apps that would allow you to note take all hands and haven't found any. I briefly toyed with building one (probably a web site with a nice mobile interface). I'm not sure if it's even possible to make it quick and easy enough to record that people would want to record every or nearly every hand.

I wouldn't worry about bb/100 though and if that's all you want (and we typically speak bb/hr in live anyway) then just a count of hands is all you need.

Yes, you should definitely record all of your big hands for study later, or to go over with a coach. That is if you want to become a great winning player. There's really no way around it. The people that do this will be the people who stand out as great players. It should be done immediately after the hand is over so you don't leave out any details.

It's very important to write down your position as well as your opponent's, effective stack sizes, reads on the villain, and exact bet sizes, flop, turn and river cards.

When I was trying to improve, my coaches in the past really beat it into me how important this is, and it will make you a much better player.

Before you go running to a coach, be sure to sit down and analyze the hand yourself. You're going to learn more by struggling than you will by being told an answer.

Also don't film your table without permission unless you want to get punched in the face / 86ed.

I've been using Poker Bankroll Tracker lately. it allows you to add notes during the session for review later. I wish each updated provided the stack amount/changes but currently it does not.. in the pic below I added red arrows to show the note entered and where it correlates to in the session.

Lots of the BR trackers have a notes section, but to record every hand? I've definitely thought about this as well ... It's like you need to combine a poker odds app with a BR app somehow.

I think the table would really perk up if they saw you going to your phone after every hand, but that may be a good thing as much as it's a 'bad' thing.

For as active as I am it might be hard to record each hand. Plus depending on which seat you are in the players to each side of you might see what hands you are plugging in for hole cards even if you mucked somewhere during the hand.

We did have a guy who recorded every hand in a day planner. He became an excellent player. I think it's a testiment to studying the game away from the table. GL

Would definitely make it a grind. Probably would help you improve, but sounds miserable.

it can be a tasks sometime.. especially if you get dealt a monster right after a note-able hand.

personally I only tend to note the hands that I feel are relevant to my session swing.

to the point of others seeing what you may of had, I treat it as if I'm texting someone.. under the table/in lap.

I've been thinking about using my headphones w/mic and taking audio notes, just get up after I fold the next hand and step back from the table. No one will know if you're making a phone call or audible texting or whatever. Then after the session just transcribe them using an actual keyboard. I haven't tried it out yet though

i personally would never unless you are playing a small player pool with many regs at high stakes and want to build their stats.

if you are playing 1/2 or 2/5 then no lol ever simply for 2 reasons, the low limit games are ridiculously easy and the numbers of actively regular players you will encounter frequently will be few and far between if the room you play at is fairly large.

I am a developer and i wrote a quick one to record hands for myself to use in tournaments. It was very useful for studying later on to get an accurate picture of what happened but you need to practice taking notes as it can be quite distracting.

I've done this before, but then you have to transcribe them later anyway and I found that if I just wrote it out the first time it saves the double work of transcribing the hands later.

I'm sure it's a personal preference. Plus if I play 6+ hours a week, that is a lot, so I don't really have many hands to worry about. If I played 30 hours/week, I'm pretty sure many would know I'm a pro, so being secretive is kinda moot and I'd just look to save the time

so playing around a little bit with my app I found a cool little tool for tracking hands.. and it's share-able via text, email, and facebook (I believe)...

https://pokerbankrolltracker.net/replayer/52

there is also another feature that let's you simply track the action so you can get the VPIP and other stats, but I've not done that as of yet.. not sure I will either, seems like a lot of work just to track some randoms that won't see enough hands to have those stats mean much.
