People say "Two pair" on a K96TK board with a pair of 2s in their hand hoping you might muck a winner. They're not misrepresenting their hand but they sorta are. You can pick a side in the debate if you want, but you can't disagree that some people may occasionally muck their winning hand at showdown.

Yeah, I never muck until I've seen their cards. But some newbie might see some guy confidently stating 'two pair' and think 'oh I can't beat that' and just muck. It's pretty dirty TBH but since it's a technically correct statement there's no point in whining about it.

I fastrolled even though it was on him to show because I was 98% sure I was good at that point. Then he did a big production sighing and eyerolling because I sucked out on the river...which is what happens when you c-bet like 15% of the pot. Anyway he eventually got caned for a couple of stacks and sooked off.

This thread is longer than I thought it would be .. Can confirm as of 3 weeks ago that The Rivers in Pittsburgh will not even SPREAD the pot for you in a NL game. I didn't play any PLO so I can't report on that ... wish this thread came out 4 weeks ago!! GL

PS .. I did it as one of my standard 'break the ice' comments when an OMC bets $25 into a $9 pot. The look from the Dealer was priceless and was followed up with a very stern "NO".

Because it’s a no limit game where you can bet your full stack. If there were pot limit hold’em live games, the same rules as in PLO should apply, including letting players know what the maximum bet size is.

There’s little things that are more annoying than the guy who asks for the $100 pot to be spread on the turn after a single bet went in on the flop.

Is this surprising to you? I thought it was standard.

It should be standard but my experience is the opposite

First casino I've been to that refused to spread the pot, in any game, cash or tournament. Possibly one of those 'as seen on TV' rules that isn't universally applied? I don't think I've ever asked for a pot spread in a 'serious' cash hand before, but I have done it late in tournaments when chip counts get higher. GL

In general dealers shouldn't be touching the pot any more than necessary. Somehow that "please spread the pot" business get into the lore of NLHE, probably through TV, so new rooms or ones with eccentric house rules allowed it. It's sort of a strange notion that the dealer owes you the privilege of counting a large pot chip by chip.

When there are out-of-the-norm denomination chips, say a $100 chip as part of a $250 pot at $1-3 NLHE, I'd prefer that the dealer make sure the big chip[s] are visible.

To be fair tournaments are completely different regarding chip denominations--more chip colors at once, fewer of the "base" chip color which is constantly changing through color-ups--so I can see how this expectation might have started there. Still though, just keep the higher denoms visible on top of the pile and there should be no reasonable expectation to have the pot spread.

Also in tournaments it's less important to minimize contact with the pot; the EV to the dealer of palming off chips and putting them in the toke box is pretty negative.

Where I play they don't allow dealers to spread the pot. Seems like most places I've played had that rule, but that's not a large sample size.

In a hand with a lot of individual chips (Which, once you get to antes, will be quite often), this is pretty unrealistic. Dealers should just pile the chips in the middle and then follow the action. The good players will have a rough estimation of how big the pot is even in a NL game.
