and on a related note, is it okay to tip in cash instead of dropping chips as you leave the table?
Not sure how the casino dealers in other areas are making out but dealers in my area make from $9-12/hr based on the number of games that they deal + tips which are pooled with all table games/poker for the day(Noon-2am) and poker dealers keep their own between 2am and Noon(our poker rooms have different hours than the casino floors which are mandated to close at 2am. Standard pooled floor tips recently have ranged from $7-$11 per hour worked and our late-night poker tips are significantly higher(I've seen as high as $70/hr).

What you can expect from dealing as a career in a nutshell:

Be prepared to spend long periods on your feet
Expect to be treated poorly/blamed by customers for their bad luck/play
Expect to lose perspective about money, its just chips after a while
If you're willing to learn new games, it can be fun and challenging
The scheduler can be your best friend or worst enemy
Be prepared to disassociate because those who can't may become depressed or unable to handle beating players for large sums of money

I'm sure that working in a resort may be different but I work in a city with a multitude of casinos that are frequented by locals. The job started out as quite fun but after years of seeing the same miserable faces losing, it's started to grind on me a bit. That being said, dealing has always seemed like pretty easy money for the environment to me.

I don't remember ever playing in a poker room where dealers stand up to deal!

Just curious about this, I have played in a lot of different rooms.

It had nothing to do with being a POKER dealer but more about being a dealer, period. The vast majority of casino dealers are on stand-up tables like blackjack, caribbean stud, roulette, craps etc.

I'm not sure how the industry works in other areas but for the casinos in my local area, dealers begin with blackjack and take subsequent training for additional games and are staffed where scheduling needs them most on any given day.
