Poker Rooms That Aren't Open 24 Hours Poker Rooms That Aren't Open 24 Hours

Some poker rooms are now opening with limited scheduled hours. I'm guessing that Vegas rooms will stay open as long as there are enough customers still playing, but close at a scheduled time if the action is slow.

My personal experience playing in a local poker room in California that closes at 2:00 am was not positive. The games start and end slow, tending to break down after midnight, with the winners mostly going home, and the stuck losers hanging on in slim hopes of getting even because so few players would start playing that late, knowing the place closes at 2.

In the morning, there is no juicy game continuing from the night before. Card rooms have to offer special deals to entice players, usually retirees (OMC) to get morning games started.

I worked on and off as a prop player in the late 90s through 2001/02. Morning was usually ok because I knew the games would pick up throughout the day.

Evenings were often terrible. Sometimes from 12:30 to 2:00 am, the table would consist of me, another prop, the manager/owner, maybe 1 or 2 regs and 1 action player, a nice guy named Simon blowing off steam after closing his restaurant for the night. Losing most of my chips to a lucky Simon during the last hours of my shift was known as getting "Simonized"!

So, if playing in games during the last 2 hours of operation, consider quitting mediocre games to avoid getting Simonized. Good luck!

I haven’t played since March but have had experience with a room that closed at 4 am (Charles Town when it first opened). My experience is the opposite of yours..the games at 2 or 3 are amazing as people try to get unstuck before the place closes. If the place never closes there is not the same desperation. That said I prefer 24 hours because of the convenience and people can’t be forced to quit while they have money left or on tilt.

Yes, if there are still full tables near closing time, the loose action is great, but when it got short all the money went to the rake. Games were 3/6 - 5/10 limit back then, and it was a small room.

I have the same experience as you (at a different room). Last hour was nutty as people tried to get unstuck. OP is probably right about about the morning games being extra crappy, though.
