too arrogant for my taste.

it sets up an image that you can't control. people will change the way they play and relate to you from then on. plus it invites further questions, and some people might consider you the resident poker expert and force you to play endless hands of fantasy poker with them. everybody wants to learn, chat, and play with the pros, and it's ****ing annoying. i'd rather be a lying scumbag.

They pretty much can figure out I'm a dealer from the way I dress. The deck of cards in my left hand is a strong tell as well.

I can see your point that you prefer not to tell someone you play poker for a living. It can be counter productive in somce cases. However, I think getting upset about it is silly.

Most players are recreational and socializing is part of the fun. Tell them you're between jobs and considering your options.

This is such an easy answer, just make something up about working for some major company or some family business. You never should be in a situation saying you play poker for a living. I can't imagine a way where this would be +ev for you in the long run

"I'm a writer's" a good one. You could make up a bunch of BS stuff and reasons they probably can't find your stuff on the market. Makes you doing your job (poker) seem like an indulgence of free time.

This is false, op just tell them your unemployed. After a while, people will know your a pro. I play at a few small places, where I put in countless hours. Once all the dealers know you and recreational players. You have no choice to be known as a pro. I tried to hide it at first. But when I sit down someone always says "watch out for that guy he is serious" or dealer would say "you do have a job, you play poker for a living". Once I got an established pro image I can run bigger bluffs and steal pots easier, because they know I play long hours and 9/10 I have the nuts.

If you feel like answering that question would only result in something negative, just make up an answer! Have some fun with it lol! Would be fun to say random stuff like "I specialize in importing rare reptilian eggs and hatching them for people" and see the looks on their faces xD

name of the company or a similar company with a cool name? I like to plan my lies a couple levels deeper before I weave them into the tapestry.

you're shocked he believed you? i mean most people don't make up random lies for fun, so shouldn't be too shocking.

I tell them I am in the State Prison, but the warden let me out on a week end pass.
(if it isn't the week end, then I start moaning about all the trouble I am going to be in).

If I really played poker for a living and a dealer said such a thing, I would never tip him again. that's completely out of line.

I play in a city with 2 poker rooms with $1/2+. The regs know I'm full of ****.
