On a side note I had a really hard last night at work when I refused to tell a player how much was in the pot the entire table erupted as though I had committed a great crime and when the floor came over and I asked him if I could tell a player how much was in the pot he said "of course."
So what is the lesser of two evils: giving the pot count, or spreading it so the player can count?

Also, by "spreading the pot" I never meant that the dealer should spread it such that each individual chip is distinct. I was thinking of situations where the pile is too tight such that the player is unsure if there are large denomination chips possibly buried underneath.

My experience with people who want the pot spread is that they want to try to count each chip. The request to spread the pot almost always follows my refusal to give a count.

And which is lesser of two evils, well as I told a floorman who once told me to spread a pot that he may as well let me just tell the player how much is in the pot so that we can at least move the game along.
