Yeah, this is way to much work for what's likely a daily donkament.
I'm usually a big rule nit but I think onus here is on the TD/room to make the rules known,which they did not. I only worked in one room that ran tournaments and when I was the TD, I'd always give the same speech. It seems simple to just confirm an approximate stack from the dealer at the broken game.
