New player coming into small blind position in cash game

New player comes into the open seat between the small blind and big blind during a hand (imagine seat 4 being small, seat 6 being big, seat 5 new player). Big blind gets knocked out. The new player wants to play the next hand with seat 4 being the button, seat 6 being empty and seat 7 not having paid any blinds yet). Does the new player in seat 5 only pay a small blindl with seat 7 as the big, does seat 5 buy the button, does seat 5 only pay the big blind (with seat 4 being the button 2 hands in a row) or does seat 5 have to wait 2 hands?

This would only apply to cash as in tournaments in my room the player would assume the small blind position.

100% room dependent.

Re: New player coming into small blind position in cash game

I assume the new player sat down during/after the '4sb-6bb' hand ...

Most rooms allow for 'dead' positions ... Not as many rooms allow a player to 'buy' the Button. Both are allowed in most of the rooms I play in.

Seat 4 is B, Seat 5 pays both SB (dead in middle) and BB while Seat 7 gets 'another' free hand. Next hand Seat 5 is B, Seat 6 is 'dead' SB and Seat 7 is BB 'alone'. Next hand Seat 6 is 'dead' B, Seat 7 is SB and Seat 8 is BB.

There are a few other scenarios, including one where there are two BB and/or the Button pays the SB until the normal play can start again. These rooms never allow a player to post by themselves even if it means a player posting on the Button or having three blinds out there for a hand or two. GL

First question is this a dead button or moving button room. Second question does room allow buying the button. If a dead button room that allows buying the button then Answer laid it out perfect (except I hate the dead SB term as it only seems to add confusion.)

If it is the seemingly less common moving button then both 5 and 7 post BB. Then on 5s second hand he post his small on the button, 7 post SB normal and 8 post BB. Third hand all is back to normal.

This is absolutely HORRIBLE. It allows the new player to get the button 2 hands in a row. What if the new player was instead a player at that table moving seats in order to take advantage of getting the button for 2 hands in a row? I know you said the button would be dead in seat 6 but this functionally makes seat 5 the button for that hand.

Dead button in tournaments. Button freezes in cash games. Players are allowed to buy the button.

Management at my room doesn't like the moving button rule because it can prevent a player from straddling (like when the small blind gets knocked out).

The rule in my room (though I'm not sure it is widely known by the staff) would have the new player buy the button and the next player posts a bug blind as well. Next hand the new player gets the button and all is back to normal.

You have this pegged but it's standard in the Midwest. The player can't straddle in the 3rd hand, but they essentially have position two hands in a row.

Some rooms only allow new players to buy the Button, moving players would wait things out and slide into the CO when available.

If you allow the B to straddle 'anyway' in the moving B scenario then I tend to lean that way myself. The knock there is they have one less hand OOP but I would tend to lean towards giving 'advantage' to players already at the table and not new players to the table.

We have both front and B straddles, so if a player has missed blinds they can straddle from UTG and get back to the table one hand earlier. This is certainly not allowed from the B as they would have to post from the CO or wait another full lap to get in 'for free'. GL

Forward moving button rule:

First hand- Seat 4 is the button, seat 5 (new player) is BB, seat 7 is also BB.
Second hand- Seat 5 (new player) is SB and button, seat 7 is also SB, seat 8 is BB.
Third hand- Seat 7 is button and back to normal.

Re: New player coming into small blind position in cash game

The way that would work in our room is this: let's say that the new guy wasn't there yet. So with seat 6, who was due to be the small blind knocked out, seat 7 would be a single big blind, and seat 4 would be the button. There would be no small blind. Then on the next hand, seat 4 would remain the button, seat 7 is SB and seat 8 is BB.

When we have a single BB situation about to happen, and a new player sits between the button and the single BB, he has the option to become the single BB. So in this case, seat 4 would be the button, and seat 5 would be the single BB; then on the next hand, seat 4 remains the button, seat 5 is SB and seat 7 is BB. So both the new guy and seat 7 will pay both the BB and SB while seat 4 is the button twice.
