New to forum and also NL live cash, tips pls

New to board, great stuff here. Not new to poker but new to live NL cash. A buddy and I are thinking about checking out a poker room in the Houston area, wondering if anyone would have suggestions where to go. We are low stakes, will play 1/3, and hopefully one that plays like 1/3 and not 5/5. Not exactly new to casino live game as I have played limit before and we have played a lot of NL home game, but new to NL live. I suspect we are good enough to be in the underdog category but not complete fish (hopefully). Thinking best case is catch some cards and win some money worse (realistic) case lose a couple clips but get to play for a while and have some fun. So any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I really feel that for a newer live NL player, the concept of position is so much more dynamic when playing live for Buy-ins that range from 300 to 500 or so.
Calls and raises are very important to have a purpose, for you, and not just because you have a great hand. (getting to act last, three-bet for a take-down, or to set up a later street, etc.)

An ongoing debate is how to play early positions, and in the blinds, when seeing a decent pair, like 99, JJ, etc., and what you should do. This is also table and game dependent; but everything being equal, I'll not raise with 10 10 or less from the sb/bb and try and set mine. JJ, QQ, sure, go ahead and either take it down or build a pot.

Am sure there will be lots of disagreement with these few insights- the beauty of poker. Good luck.

Try checking out Paramount Social. We have a lot of great rooms here in Houston but that one spreads 1/2 with a $300 initial cap and then its match the stack once the game starts.

They usually get enough tables going in the evening that if yours is playing like 5/5 or higher you can move over to a different game quickly that is playing smaller.

Thanks Dave. Def plan to play way tight early, then maybe open up some after feeling out the table a little bit.

Fold, much more then you think you should. AJo in early position? Throw it away. 89s and someone raised already? Throw it away. 33 in middle position? Throw it away.

The rake is very high, and I am going to guess you are not a super talented poker player (just cause you have only played home games), which means you should fold a lot.

It sucks to sit and not play many hands, but you will be able to play for longer. Drink a beer or whatever if it won't make you play too many hands or make silly choices.

Be aware of what's going on at the table. Watch the action, listen to the players and the dealer. When it's your turn and there has been action you aren't sure about, ask what the action was and/or what your options are. Know house rules (is forward action with chips binding or do they have to cross a hard betting line), what happens when someone acts out of turn (OOT).

Protect your action. If you are 'skipped', speak up immediately. If you aren't sure if a player called or raised, check. If you don't know the amount of a bet, ask. Do they use an "All-in" button? Do they just ask for "a stack" to be moved on an all-in bet? Do they allow the single chip call?

Take your time and be deliberate with your actions. Be sure what the action is to you, and either clearly state your intended action before acting, or be sure to do it in all at once.

Fold a lot. Keep watching the action.

Have fun, but keep the alcohol consumption to a minimum.

Oh I agree, and I think it's fine for you to play them if you bring a blackjack attitude to the table - which it sounds like you kind of are - not in any sort of bad way, but like "we're gonna bring some money, fire some shots, and have a good time" instead of "we're gonna crush the game, beat the noobs, stack the cash"

Poker should be fun, it's a better game when people approach it as gambling. Just like, if you are trying to bring the latter 'crusher' mindset, then mostly fold them, and don't lie to yourself about what you're doing

Though if you're gonna fold any of them, 89s is a good one to fold

There is no rake in Texas, only 'time' charge. You know exactly what you're paying per hour to sit there.

If you can believe all the streams, which there are a lot, Texas poker is a little different and if you plan on playing the role of a Super Nit you will probably get run over eventually. More than likely the lower stakes play 'more normally' than the action junkies that get to sit in the streams.

When 'major' poker industry people are moving to Texas to set up shop, you should know that the area is prime for profit.

All the stories I've heard from Texas about the poker are good (at the table) and Players want to go back. A few Players protect their home turf a bit but that's to be expected. Just go in there and let Texas be Texas and stay out of the sports/political conversations and play your game. GL

Thanks for the answer, answer. Never heard of a time rake, that’s interesting. Will probably start real tight until I kind of see what is going on and open it up some from there. Hopefully get a fun table where folks aren’t taking things too too seriously.

It's because gambling is technically illegal. They set it up as a social club with "members" so you pay time instead of rake.
