IME, displaying any interest whatsoever simply encourages them, and they will then repeat the same story several times more.

Hand stories are a mild problem.

People who feel the need to talk about what they folded (and believe it is truly interesting) are vile and need their kneecaps smacked with a perrier bottle.

Saw a guy wearing a shirt once that said "No one cares what you folded".
I considered finding that shirt on the Interwebs and purchasing 5 of them so that, even on my busiest live poker week, I can always be wearing that shirt whilst playing.

Which means you show interest all the time, right?

To encourage them to focus on their stories instead of the game, and to have them relive their bad beats over and over again in their minds instead of moving on, right?

Or did you actually mean that you want people to stop telling boring ass stupid ass stories and concentrate on the game?

I dislike listening to hand stories but I like people explaining their poker thinking to me.

Mostly I pretend to be interested, by nodding and uh-huhing, and then offering some all-purpose comment like, "Well, that's poker for you", etc.

No telling what he'll do, maybe shoot himself right there at the poker table.
