... A Cooler is when player's have basically equal hands at the high end of their range. Like when 2 hands are basically in a 'no fold' position like Set v OESFD. AA v KK PF, Set over Set, Top straight v Middle straight, Flush over Flush are also Cooler spots.
... What's being referred to above, IMHO, is a Suck-Out. A Suck-Out is when a completely dominated hand pulls out victory. A Cooler can turn into a Suck-Out ... see AA v KK with K on the Board.
Most Suck-Outs typically have 'bad poker' attached to the V but in the case of a Cooler or a hand with a decent draw that might still be a Suck-Out but not bad poker.
Runner-Runner 'anything' is definitely a Suck-Out .. period. (And most likely never a Cooler.)
The hand I have trouble with is like A8 Flopping 2 pair v AK. Is that a Cooler and a Suck-Out? Or neither? I don't really think it's a Cooler, but it is a Suck-Out whether on the Flop, Turn or River.
I think you need to drag pot odds into your definition as well and not just 'outs'. So A8s v AK is certainly not a Cooler when played for 10bb in a limped pot, but it's still a Suck-Out.
These phrases are wide open for discussion for sure .. GL
