A friend went to FW for the HHJ yesterday, his first time playing live. He played 1/2, and acted out of turn twice. The second time he did it he said a guy at the table said he was going to call the floor to request at least a one orbit penalty if it happened again. Does this ever happen in a cash game? Sorry if in wrong thread, just the thought of a penalty in a cash game sounds a little off to me.

He also never did it again though, so the threat worked.

If the floor thinks he is doing it intentionally they probably will issue him a warning (not a one orbit sit out though, no,) at some point.

In this situation I would hope it would be clear to the floor that he is a first time player and they would just pull him aside for a moment and kindly and politely explain why it's important to always play in turn. And hopefully that would be enough for your friend to understand and make sure he is doing it correctly from there on out.

I suggest a KITN for somebody trying to get the obvious noob penalized in a $1/$2 cash game.

Why couldn't the guy just explain that it is actually a big deal to act out of turn and even though the one acting out of turn doesn't benefit from that could hurt other players in the hand. That way he realizes the consequences of his "harmless mistake" and actually learn instead of doing something to avoid a penalty.

Maximum would be for the floor to politely ask him to be more careful. No one orbit penalties in cash games, ever. If he kept on doing it intentionally, MAYBE a floor might ask him to leave, but I doubt it unless it was really frequent and obviously deliberate.
Player who complained is obviously a jerk or a tournament player (or both).

I give myself a 1 orbit penalty anytime I want to go for a smoke.

I don't actually understand this being a penalty in a cash game at all.

No phones allowed at the table. I keep checking and messing with mine. Get warned a couple times. Dont GAF and keep doing it. 1 rd penalty

The floorman issued the one round penalty to you?

Probably more accurate to call it a one-round forced break if it's a cash game.

Either way I'm not aware of that actually being a thing in cash games.

What are the odds the guy getting all worked up about the new player acting out of turn was sitting directly to his right?

Less silly if it was a cash game with antes, but I doubt it was.

Remembered one which I thought was fairly absurd. 4/8 limit with at least 4 or 5 people seeing a flop, so only one or two chops all day. It was folded to me and I looked down at queens so I raised. The big berated me for not letting them chop, and in his own words spite called. Flop seemed harmless, turn a king which he hit. At showdown I went to muck and he said something about my deserving to lose for raising with crap to try to steal the blinds. I probably shouldn't have but I showed my queens then mucked.

Later on in the day, a woman who was clearly new joined the game. She went through a hundred fairly quickly and rebought. I raised in early position with ace king, she called out of the big. I ended up flopping top pair, she checked each street and I rivered the nut straight and bet. She check raised me with a set, and I raised her back.

The same guy who said I raised with crap to steal his blind told me it was going to be bad luck for me because I raised someone who was clearly new to the game.

Small limit game. Bunch of limpers in hand, SB raises, and everyone calls.

SB bets flop, everyone calls.

SB bets turn, everyone calls.

SB bets river, everyone calls.

SB shows pocket aces and wins.

One player says: "wow, that's the most disguised pocket aces I have ever seen." Another agrees.

So this means you never chop I assume. Because if otherwise, you're actually offering multiple examples of absurdity in the same story!

He wasn't the SB, so unable to chop.

Villain is rich medicinal marijuana grower who button straddles all-in for $700 every hand, among other insane things.

I have $220 and V. has about $550-600.

Villain is UTG+1 and puts out $40 blind pre. (This has been going on all night.) I'm in MP with KQd. Folds to me. I flat. Everyone else folds.

Flop: Kc8d3s

V. hasn't looked a this cards yet, and bets $50.

I call.

Turn is a blank.

Villain asks me if I want him to look at his cards. I say, "Sure!"

He looks at his hand and goes all-in. I tank for less than a minute or so and he says, "I'll let you see one card." He flips over the 2s (!?!?) and I snapcall for a nice double-up.

He had 82o.

Why did he show the 2!?

Where is this game? I'm buying plane tickets immediately.

Because if he shows you something that pairs the board you'll fold A-high and draws?

Or just because he's an action junkie and likes messing with you.

Some people also just randomly flip one card when asked like that, without checking which it is.
