This is correct live play etiquette. You either chop, or you don't.

Not if the jackpot has a minimum pot size.

Where I play there needs to be $10 in the pot.

so if there's $4 in the pot & the board looks like there may be a high hand out there, one guy will bet just $5, basically telling the other to just call so the min. is in the pot.

it's a common understanding where I play at.

(& usually the guy will give the $5 back to the other guy, if not a little more)

Do you guys really think if 2 people have FH+ (some places quads+) that they're going to check down a limped $4 pot?!? Come on...

And lol @ having a hand that good and calling a river $5 bet. No wonder these morons suck at the pokerz

.... and this is why teh pokerz will always be profitable.

While I could see some people checking 2 streets with a jackpot hand like 66 on a 664 board because "what the hell else has anything?" .... there's no way in hell a $5 bet OTR isn't getting raised, and then re-raised. The money's going in.

Also, if you're going to chop, just ****ing chop. It's not worth the "I have a BBJ hand, do you?" looks and wait. Hell, I don't even look at my cards if I'm in a chop situation.

This literally happened at Foxwoods not too long ago fyi. It was a hand between a man and a woman in a fixed limit game. I'm failing hard at search right now.

I heard that, but I thought it was Mohegan. I think it was a straight flush vs quads. The minimum pot had to be $20. A bet and a call would've gotten it there.

bad enough at Mohegan, but at FW it would've been a 6 figure brain fart.

Ah yes, thank you. Helps to have the right casino when searching. The jackpot was pretty large:

Congrats, you found 1 instance out of the many many many times it doesn't happen and isn't reported on.

And considering the clientele at low stakes limit games, the blue hair probably couldn't read their cards to realize they had the bottom end straight flush

You must not have played enough live poker to see the ol' "Why should I bet? He probably didn't have anything anyway?" or the "I was hoping you'd bet!" move (after flopping quads and checking three streets out of position) frequently enough to understand that it actually happens. Just because you personally can't fathom ever making such poor poker decisions doesn't mean your opponents do. Maybe you have the problem of assuming everyone thinks like you do? You can leave a lot of money on the table with that sort of mindset

Wait are you really getting defensive over this? I'm sharing a documented case with you in the most appropriate place possible, not pushing you onto the sword you've apparently propped up for yourself. Leave me out of your struggle please.

Disagree. Especially when there is session fee and no rake. If I have AA I ain't chopping! If I have A9s on the BB I ain't chopping! Either fold the $2 or play. What the hell does etiquette have anything to do in a game where is sole purpose is to take each other's monies.

I dont chop. I think it makes more sense to fold small blind.
Btw this is what I think.

At Foxwoods, talking about the bad beat during a hand can make the hand ineligible.

Well, it definitely is established etiquette. If you choose not to follow it, it's your choice, just like any other rude behavior.
You must be a joy to play with....
Incidentally, this attitude is EV-.

Really?! More than one FW dealer has told me they have been instructed to loudly correct any player who makes that claim.

OK, maybe that's the case, but better to be safe than sorry.

On a really nitty technical note, isn't discussing the bad beat during a hand an OPTAH violation.

I think it's considered collusion isn't it, which I suppose is a form of an OPTAH violation.

I've been playing live poker since MM boom and this is the first time I'm hearing about chop etiquette.

I don't ask for chops in the SB.

When I'm in BB, I've looked at my cards before action is OTB. If offered a chop when I have a good hand, I decline, and if I have rags, I accept.

I don't believe this to be bad etiquette, and would have zero opposition if anyone else were to do that. It isn't an angle, and it isn't unethical in any way.

If you are the type of person who thinks this is "rude".....

I don't really care if you choose to chop or not, or decide to do it based on position/cards. I just find it surprising you've played 13 years and never noticed this convention of etiquette.
