I personally think some middle ground is best. Some table talk, even if you're going along with the prevailing (read: inaccurate) wisdom, at least doesn't look as suspicious as being too positive about your enemies' play, which is the poker equivalent of shuffling along with your hands behind your back, whistling innocently.
Agree totally.

The irony of this post is incredible.

FYI, when you make a raise bigger than the size of the pot, you offer < 2:1 odds. The odds limit you're thinking of is 1:1.

Local pub poker tournament. Honestly, the stories I hear could fill this thread tenfold. But I'll start with one of my favourites.

Blinds 1000/2000. UTG goes all in for 4000. There is a caller from MP, who calls all in, for 3500. Folds to BB (about a 35yr old, been on his table all night, seemed like a standard pub poker donk), who has about 50k behind. I'm in the SB. He shows me Kings, and insta mucks.

I'm sitting there in shock. UTG has AK, wins with A high, pot it shipped. After the hand is over, I turn to BB and ask "why would you fold Kings there?"

"I just don't like them mate."

Playing in a tourney last night. A noob has second nut flush draw and check calls the flop and turn then shoves for not a lot when the flush card hits on the river. He gets called by top set or something equally large.

Noob says in an apologetic voice...

"I would have folded if anyone else called you, but when everyone else folded I had to call."

Wow.

Later on I called 3 all in's with a pretty big draw having everyone in the pot well covered. We all had draws and all missed and the same guy took it down with A high. He then commented "I don't know why you called when everyone else did, you had to be beat".

Guy seems to play his draws on another level.

I don't try to force this feeling, I don't try to explain it, but when it happens it rarely, rarely fails me.

Just the first example I can think of. I have 57o in MP of a homegame tourney. No raises to me, I look down and just know I'm going to make a straight, and call. Board comes out KJ8. Check around to LP bettor, folds around to me and I call. Turn 9, C/C. River 6, C/Raise. Other player had KJ. You can think I'm wrong, or a donk or whatever ... but when I feel it, I just follow it. Dude looked at me like I was nuts, and I just stammered "I just knew", pretty shocked myself at what just happened.

And no I wasn't dealing.

I'm not saying it is, but your post is basically, "OMFG ROFLCOPPTER!!! THAT GUY IS TOTALLY OVERESTIMATING THE OTHER GUYS 3BARRELL BLUFF PERCENT!!!!"

And while that may be true, it just doesn't fall under "absurd poker thinking."

Once, a kid sat next to me at a 5/10 Holdem game. After losing most of his buy-in rather quickly, he turned to his buddies on the rail and said, "Man, I don't get why I'm losing so badly. I'm playing just about every hand."

My friend told me that he was dinking around in the 1/2 LHE game just hoping to hit the BBJ which has grown to about $250k when he heard a dark sunglasses/hoodie kid at the table say that the cardroom had transferred several dealers from the other cardroom in the area (there are two and they own both) because these dealers are "better at dealing a bad beat jackpot" than other dealers and that is mainly due to the fact that they are actually shuffling and not using an autoshuffler. According to microstakes Phil Laak, using an autoshuffler makes it impossible to have a BBJ whereas the method these dealers use to shuffle and deal gives them prime opportunities to deal a bad beat qualifying hand.

Okay, it's obviously very important for you to win this one so you win.

The guy wasn't absurd, he appears to be just like you, according to your last line anyway.

Two points here:
1) sometimes: I can understand sometimes going with a gut feeling or taking a shot. However in my example I'm pretty sure the woman had a gut feeling every single hand she played. The problem with gut feelings leads to point 2...
2) gut feelings rewarded: the best thing for me at that table is that woman hit her Q on the river; because that just positively reinforced her about her gut feelings. Now she'll call me down with ATC with that gut feeling again.

One leak I know I have to suppress is being rewarded for "taking a shot" or "gambooooling!" I have to remind myself that isn't good poker play, it was lucky.

I was the button at a 1/2 NLHE game at the Luxor when I visited LV this past February and it was limped to me, I had KK so I put in a decent raise. The Big Blind next to me (a guy in his 60's?) called me and everyone folded. He remarked that he had to call because when you're in the blinds you get the cards that are "more in the middle of the deck" and therefore will be better for the flop. I looked at him and said, "but it's all random, what does it matter where your cards come from?" and he replied, "if you believe that then you don't know a thing about gambling!"

I won a decent pot from him when his 94o made top pair....

Flop is 2-2-A Turn 2 River 2. 2 Players after flop. Both check turn UTG bets on the river. UTG+1 stares down the guy who bet and says " you have the king don't you" Mucks his hand.

This also does not qualify as "absurd." If he said "I always fold jacks preflop, even if there's no raise, they suck," then that would qualify as absurd.

I'd say it's pretty absurd thinking to raise tens for value preflop but not jacks.

I just backed off absolute certainty because I knew what the reception of it (ITT especially) would be. I really just try not to think about it. When it happens it happens, when it doesn't I just stick to my A game.

Smallstakes players are bad, but at any given table at least a few players understand the basic concepts and can conjure up reasonable EV calcs in their head for AA vs ATC and realize AA wants very much to get all in preflop and see a showdown.
But when you mess with the sanctity of the chop, you get what you get!!! That is their mentality, it's not they were saying bad play to get allin with AA v J5, it's a bad play to not chop and THATS WHY, you might get cracked. Same as when someone doesn't agree to chop a tournament, if they bust next, the other players all nod knowingly "that's what happens if you don't chop". Live players are DUMB.
