From last night at $1/2: Guy calls a 50+ preflop bet against two other players, one all in. 2nd player goes all in on the J high flop for about $120 more. The guy calls again. On the river first guy shows Ax to lose, 2nd guy (who went all in on the flop) shows pocket kings. Third guy shows a set of 4's -- he'd binked his set on the RIVER.

He stands up and starts peacocking and loudly proclaiming how he "had to call", because "you see those guys on TV poker tournaments betting 'thousands of dollars' on pocket 4's preflop, so what's $50 preflop when they are worth thousands?".

I'm certain that what I got can't be beat. It happened the other day and made me think of this thread, which might have to be closed after this cause I got the nuts.

Live 5/5 nl... I sit down and to my right sits a 20 something wearing the cliche 'pro' uniform, headphones, track jacket, etc. He has two books on the table next to his chips. 'Play poker like the pros' by hellmuth and 'harrington on cash games volume 1.' He consults these books throughout every hand he plays. Although nobody seems interested, he announces to the table that the hellmuth boom is more basic and good for selecting starting hands, whereas the harrington book is for 'really complicated postflop decisions.'

After a few orbits, it's folded to our avid reader in the cuttoff, who consults the hellmuth book and limps (65 bb deep). Folded to sb who raises to 7bbs. Avid reader calls (eff stack was his 65bb). Avid reader calls. Flop 88Jr. Sb bets 11bb, avid reader calls. Blank turn. Sb bets 16bb and reader calls (now having committed near two thirds of his stack. River is a king and check, check. Sb shows pocket queens, avid reader shows k9 off and takes the pot. Sb says wtf... Avid reader says he had Implied odds. Sb says wtf u mean, you called most of your stack with air. Avid reader picks up the harrington book, and points to a paragraph that says that the worse your opponent is, the better your implied odds so the more you can call. He says 'if you were a better player I wouldn't have called that much, but your so bad that I had the correct implied odds.'[
Oh my god. How did you not start laughing? I did and I wasn't there.

Laugh? Hell no - you smile, nod, and say, "I never thought about it that way!" and prepare to take stacks.

My friend in the BB checks in a 6-way limped pot.. flop comes AKQ all clubs.. my friend checks, next guy (villain) bets like 6 bb, gets 4 callers, and then my friend min-raises to 12 bb... villain re-raises, the other 4 guys fold, my friend goes all, villain calls around 70 bb... my friend of course shows the J-high nut flush, and the villain tables an Ace with the 6 of clubs, says "had to call".

in addition to facebook, reddit poker is also a good one although probably on a slightly higher (lower?) level of stupid

When people ask me if the games are drying up I send them over to /r/poker and they go "oh".

I enjoyed this nugget from last night...

UTG+1 announces he's making a blind raise to 30 before the hand is dealt, and cuts out £30.

UTG limps, UTG+1 raises as promised, folds round to UTG who... Folds.

Well played.

His hand probably plays better multiway than heads up

Yeah, probably didn't want to fold and then see 6 callers behind, and decided it was worth £1 or £2 to reserve the option

With something like 98s, not totally out of the question. Not really a good play OOP, but hardly absurd.

Something similar not sure if posted it here before.

3 of us see a flop and I lead out for 1000 player b to my left thinks and while he thinks the next player c goes all in for 5000ish. player b is obv aware of the all in behind but bet is still 1000 to him. He calls 1000. Comes round to me I think he is not folding and obv wants me in so I fold. Player b thinks for a while and ends up folding.
Everyone looks at each other like WTF and he says I had to call not knowing he was going all in behind me

OMC on my right last night at 1/2 flats a $12 open in position with QQ with 50bb. Flop is A95 and the OMC flashes me the queens and folds to a cbet. Another player asks why the OMC didn't 3 bet. OMC responds 'have you even been paying attention?! Have you SEEN the way the cards have been flopping tonight? It was obvious an Ace was coming'.

Then gives a head shake like the guy who asked was a complete idiot

Fair enough but OMCs aren't changing their ways and 3 betting QQ if Doyle Brunson gave them the advice. 3 betting is for AA and KK only

Player leads into the preflop raiser. Preflop raiser raises the bet on the flop. Other player reraises. Preflop raiser folds. After the hand, a guy who won't stop talking strategy (terrible strategy) says "Raising to find out where you're at isn't a loss. It's an investment."

You've clearly never watched Doyle play for any period of time.

But that's not the point. Not 3-betting QQ there is bad, but nowhere near as bad as trying to teach him how to play better.

Not exactly 'absurd thinking' but a minnow couple sit at my table, and the boyfriend says to the player next to him 'she lost with Aces once'.. This stuck a nerve and responded ' ohh, low blow.. Can't believe you bought that up'

So good LOl

I love players who look for patterns like this and forgets about the old adage of Dice have no memory.

Yep because Doyle wrote that famous book on 1/2.... oh wait you mean 1/2 is not the same as no cap no limit games with min buy some where the cost of a New Car?

Of couse there is always the chance of him just saying that becouse he is doing some meta. His real "absurd thiking" was to flash his hand in the first place.
