I can't count how many times I've seen people flat KK pre-flop. They always say they don't want to build a big pot until they see whether or not an A is going to come on the flop. Then I nod and acknowledge their deep wisdom.

Sure it didn't happen more like this?

Big action, 1/2 game. A raise and 3 callers, pot is about $50. Flop comes KT4 DD.

SB leads out for half pot. Next to act makes a minraise, which is technically a string raise, but not an egregious one at all. Pretty boarderline. SB says, "hey, that's a string raise!"

Dealer enforces it. A third player just calls.

Fast forward to the river. The guy who tried the string raise has not put any more money in, but the third player has put his whole stack in and been called by the SB who called a string raise. No straights or flushes have come in.

The all in shover, the third player, turns over his cards, 44. Flopped bottom set. I would bet twice the pot that he is good.

The SB, who called the string raise, turns over TT. He flopped second set.

Asked what he was thinking, calling a string raise when he was holding middle set, he said it was basically just a lapse. He saw the string raise, so he called it without considering the situation. He had a laugh at himself, which was easy to do while stacking all the chips.

Hardly anything wrong with this just a lapse in SA

Lots of addons. To be fair lots of players were also, non-ironically, using cheat sheets of hand rankings.

I always hate when you see someone hit a flush and they opened early and they had like 83 suited. And they turn it over and go, "What? It was suited."

Great example of absurd thinking, getting annoyed by your opponents playing badly.

1/2 NL game at a loosey-goosey table.

BB in seat 9 has KK. Limps all the way around to button, a Russian chick who raises every hand to $7. SB calls, BB pops it to $45. 3 callers before the button goes all in for about $180, SB goes all in for about $85, BB goes all in for $600. Seat 1 thinks & thinks & finally folds & seat 4 calls for his last $375.

Flop comes AQ7-7-7

Seat 4 shows A2 off to win the pot. proceeds to tell table how he had to call with so much money out there.....

IDK, but to me it seems pretty absurd that with 3 all in's in front of you, & a healthy stack, you would think your A2 off is the best ace out there. (although it was...)

And people wonder if South Florida's rep for having some of the softest poker in the world is really true, lol.

It is; it is.

Couple of callers around to the UTG straddle of $6 ... UTG makes it $36 to go.

MP (first limper) makes it $81 with $220 behind ... UTG thinks and calls.

Flop comes KQ7r ... UTG checks, MP shoves $220 into $180ish.

UTG (covers) thinks and says "I put you on QQ PF ... I call"

Spoiler:
UTG shows 77 .... GL

Not really that absurd. Once the flop gave him a set, he changed the hand that he put his opponent on. This is simple stuff.

When we started playing holdem for the first time in high school someone had two pair with an extra pair on the board and successfully argued to the group that 3 pair was statistically less likely than 3 of a kind so he took down the pot over the person that had 3 of a kind - this was pre internet.

A few weeks later a slightly older player joined our game and was shocked when it happened again - he lost the argument but showed up next time where he brought a handbook that explicitly stated only 5 cards played and thus there was no such hand as 3 pair.

Despite it's reputation, the Internet has done wonders to curb ignorance.

I also beat someone's 3 of a kind K with AK vs my boat with K6s and he was shocked I called his 3bet preflop - to which I responded "King six is a great hand and it was suited"

It's really shocking I was still a winning player back then - thank god for variance.

Player goes all in for 4000 and gets called by the guy to my right and then I call with 77. Flop comes 10-8-K rainbow. Guy to my right bets into me so I fold thinking he probably has a hand that knocks out the all in.

All in had A9 and guy to my right had 4-2 diamonds(no ****ing joke) neither improve and all in triples up.

I say to the guy "what in the world were you doing there?
His response was "I was trying to bet you out of the pot"

The best part of this thread is when people post examples of their own absurd thinking.

It depends. Is a string bet something that should be called every time and dealer was remiss in not calling it or is a string bet something that active players are allowed to call if they want it enforced. Different rooms have different rules. If it's the former the player should point out a string bet even if it harms him. If it's the later the player needs to decide if he's willing to give away hand strength by calling or not calling a string raise.

I had a spot where I shove the turn with a set and dealer premature burns and turns the river which pairs the board (flush draw on board). I can say nothing knowing that's a great river card for me or I can explain it's a premature burn and turn and that card needs to come back. I chose to explain that I had shoved turn and other player didn't act because that's the rule.

$35 twice weekly tournament and casino, always a few novices. The novices ALWAYS play A2o and they ALWAYS call off all their chips behind and then get there. One week, novice limps, tight guy goes all in, limper novice calls with A2o and hits a board of 22TAx against JJ. Next week, I go all in for a small amount and 4 people call. Flop is A57. Guy goes all in with 57, novice calls with A2o, 2 on the turn.... lol

Saw this last night at a local $45 pub tourney.

Final table 9 handed, p1 raises utg, p2 in mp goes all in, p3 in button snap calls all in, p1 calls. P1 shows AA, p2 shows JJ, p3 shows K3dd and spikes trip 3s on the flop of course. Entire table is like "wtf were you thinking" "I had a feeling".

Very next hand utg open shoves, hero in mp reshoves with TT, p3 from previous hand tanks for a minute then folds AQhh face up and says "it looked too good to call".

to be fair i think we've all experienced this rationale to some extent in our early days - distinctly remember there was a time I'd snap fold AJ but call off 56s in multiway shove assuming the other guys had each other's outs ie most of the face cards were spoken for and was just hoping there wasn't a pocket pair. I wasn't alone on this either.

Took a lot of expensive lessons before stopped but foolishly still utilize in many a hyper turbo when short stacked.

A guy was considering calling an all-in and argued with himself out loud: "If I call, you'll have a set, but if I fold you'll be bluffing." Re rambled a bit more and said, "Okay, I'll call anyway."

Yes, he really believed that his decision would affect the hand the other player had.
