You'd be suprised how many players will snap do this, its not a good idea to try an be cute by shoving without cards especially vs a reg that will be favored over you, no good can come of it

And how does that make it ok exactly? Even if it's "legal" to call when a player if forced to go all in with no cards that doesn't mean it's right or in the spirit of the game

Because the spirit of the game isn't the number one consideration for someone who is there almost entirely to make money. Nor should it be. If I need to grind out the money in order to make rent, it's a mistake for me not to take an opportunity as good as that one.

Also, why should the rest of the table get punished because one idiot picked the wrong time to make a bad joke

It's poker. The "spirit of the game" is predatory.

Lady played 9 5 suited because there is a straight flush award, insisted they were playable to draw to the sf. Made for a lot of laughs.

Last I checked if 678 of that suit rolls off she will have a straight flush.

Would be a better story if she had said that about 94s or T5s.

True, but what are the odds?

Straight Flush......1:64,974 Source

72,192:1 Source

My figures are probably before the cards are dealt, when you have two of the required cards the odds improve.

Small stakes mtt tourney, 6000 to start ... A LOT of regs, same faces, etc.

Within first three hands, blinds 50/100, get Ad10d on my BB. Young guy I haven't played with before in LP raises to 300, I call, we go HU to the flop (650). K3J, one diamond. I got a gutter. I check, he bets 400, I call. Pretty much knowing if I don't hit a Q or diamond ott, I'll shut down. Turn (1450) brings another diamond. He only bets 500, I call, I'm not going anywhere. River (2450) brings the 8d. I check, he bets 700. I initially think about c/r to 1500/1600 for five secs, but opt to go AI instead. I figure it'll look fishy, hoping for a call. He's surprised, observes me, looks at the board, even some verbal - 'a missed draw' ... 'putting me to the test this early are ya' he says. Takes two mins to decide to call. I showdown the nut flush. He doesn't show.

He's polite about it, 'nh' gets up and leaves, but immediately two other players to my right start openly criticizing 'how bad I played that', 'what was I doing there on that flop' etc etc. They aren't even looking or talking to me directly. I just rake the chips in, not about to say anything.

Fast forward. Villain to my right has just came to the table from one that broke, he's short stacked, 2100, blinds are now 300/600. EP, perhaps UTG, he shoves. I look down at A10o. I wanna isolate, so I shove over the top for 3x more, 6100. Goes around the entire table until yep you guessed it, one of the players from earlier who didn't like my play asks for a count, she covers barely. She calls with pocket eights. Board bricks out, so she wins and I just smile to myself, say nh and leave. A shove and a reshove, my image having been tight and she calls with 8s and I'm the one playing bad? Ok.

$300 tourney, 15,000 chips, early 100/200. I'm BB with red aces. Four callers I make it 800, get two callers. Flop is kJ10 rainbow. I lead for 2000 and only button calls. Turn is a blank, I bet 3500, button calls. River is an ugly 9. I check, he checks and shows kq and says he thought I had aq.

Not sure calling a 10bb reshove with 88 is bad, especially given UTG's shoving range will be super-wide there.

This isn't a strat thread though so I'm not going to discuss this further.

There is nothing absurd about calling a 10bb shove with 88

It's very common for players in these things to overvalue any pair. You'll often hear "I was ahead!" when they lose these hands. It's not about ranges. It's about "I'm ahead" and you'll see that the same people that will fold AJ or AQ in the BB to a short stack shove would have snap called with 66.

Way too common to consider that absurd. But pay attention to these people. They will tell you exactly how they play day in and day out.

New guy sits at table and he's an action player. By his looks he's rich and he's clashing with lots of players at the table. I get in a hand with him and this guy who's been whining all day about being card dead.

Flop comes K33 I think I had AK. The action player was in BB.

Action play goes all in on flop. Whiner guy cries for little bit because he doesn't know what I'm gonna do. He ends up folding and I folded because the guy either had a flush draw or a 3 and I wasn't in mood to risk stack I had been building all day.

Guy who folded comes at me, "Why did you fold? he had a flush draw"

I disagreed. This guy had only played couple hands and it was obvious he was an action player. So I either get it in ahead with flush draw or basically dead when he shows the 3.

Anyways I might be wrong, but the guy who folded was berating me saying villain had flush draw but there was no way to actually know. We never did find out but I'm still convinced he had a 3.
