If nothing else, it's a matter of showing some respect to those around you. And having some respect for yourself. For the record, I don't own a suit either. But I do dress respectably when in public.
People with self respect tend to have a certain standard in how they take care of themselves. Now, I always wear jeans and a solid colored t-shirt when I play. But I usually shower before I head out, and the jeans are clean and the t-shirt is not faded and is unwrinkled. Yes, you don't have to over dress and look pretentious, but how you look is part of who you are. Take pride in that.
That being said, I do not have flip flop or sandal hate. As long as everything is clean and not ratty, it is fine.
But I do own several suits. Had to get them for the job. Turned out I like the way I look in a nice suit.
