knocking on the table after a hand means: good hand, right? Lately I have seen people, younger players, knocking on the table after every hand that they win. (often their opponents have played horrible hands that deserve to lose, so there was no suckout or cold deck or anything surprising about the outcome).

I think it is more of a habit or ritual than anything.

I agree. Also, with the people I have seen do it, it seems like it's a way to deal with their excitement of winning a big hand without being disrespectful of opponents.

it can mean differnet things. often it means something along the lines of, "I lost, but there are no hard feelings." generally the loser does it not the winner. but with all of us internet kids running around, who knows.

what's wrong with telling your opponent "good hand" regardless of whether it was a good hand or not?

as an aside, has anyone noticed that "nice/good hand" means "you had a very strong/rare hand" to fish, and "well-played hand" to non-idiots?

My understanding is good hand, or well done. That's what I mean when I do it anyways. I can't think of ever doing it as the winner though.. that sort of .. hm.. doesn't really make sense to me. If I saw a winner did that it would almost look like, "Me do poker. Me hand gud. Me play gud."

it means they saw someone do it on tv and want to be like them so they do it too.

I never say "good hand" when I lose. If I lose, the hand sucked. There's nothing good about it. I usually say something like "well...f*ck!"

I believe it is a similar tradition to knocking the butt end of your cue against the ground when your opponent makes a nice shot in billiards. Thus, "nh".

Sometimes I do this out of habit in tournaments when I knock another player out, as in "gg".

normally it does just mean good hand. overdoing it is annoying and stems from too much tv poker.

i only find myself doing it when i win a huge pot when me and the other guy are all in coin flip situation after the flop to let him know that he made the right move

i do it when someone calls me and i have air, generally when they see this, they know thier top pair or whatever is good and just flip it up, then i dont gotta show my hand...............its kind of a nice gesture i guess, "nh" or whatever..........donks like it

i will knock the table or say "good/nice hand" or "good job" before mucking my losing hand. it's a habit not to mean much of anything

I knoc the tabke when someone is all in and I want to wish them luck and when someone turns over a monster to say 'Nice Hand!" I try not to overuse it.

Knocking at the table generally means "I am a complete fish, take all of my monies". It is pointless and irritating imo.

To people who have played live for a while it is an unconscious reflex action that means "good hand" and you do it after your opponent shows down the winning hand and you muck. I doubt I could stop doing it even if I tried.

For newer players, especially those who have a lot of internet poker experience and who are seasoned players it can mean whatever they want it to mean.

Knocking on the table can mean:

"good hand'
"nicely played"
"good to know"
"that was brutal"
"wow you lucky donk"
"roll on the next hand"
"at least it cant get much worse"
"i really needed those chips"
"why?"
"this is getting frustrating"
"hello table-monster are you home?"
"hit me, sorry i am drunk and though i had cards and that this was blackjack
"you played awfully but you are a young stacked hottie so I am going to knock the table to get your attention and smile at you thereby improving my chances of you touching me sometime in the future, i'm just so damned lonely"

It is all about context.

funny post, but that's what is annoying me. Its supposed to just mean "good hand," but dumb young guys who saw someone do it on tv now do it after EVERY HAND

Plus there are times when you know if you open your mouth either a long stream of obscenities is about to pour forth or your going to start crying. Knocking seems like a good alternative

Most of the younger kids can't tell their ass from a hole in the ground so I really doubt they have any idea of when it's proper to tap the table, or what it even means for that matter. All they know is that they saw it done in "Lucky You", and it's cool.... Ship it holla,TAP TABLERZZZ!!!!

This might be hard to believe, but some of us were playing poker before it was big on TV, and haven't let the fact that some of the things we do are now on TV stop us from doing them.

Table knock means NH or TY or CHECK or OK, the latter especially from dealers before burning and turning, meaning, OK?

I agree with the poster who thinks it came originally from pool players tapping their stick for "nice shot."

Except for the crying part, that's why I do it.

Of course, I do it in my kitchen when playing online too. Maybe I'm just nuts.

I usually tap the table after ending a session and standing up, saying something like good luck everybody.
