Ok, so I was outside this liquor store, drinking my beer, listening to music on my head phones, just chilling. I see a guy I recognized, he walked into the store and out after a minute or so. He tells me "hello, I played vs you at the casino before, do you remember me?" I said yes you look familiar.

Then he asked, when was the last time I played, if I ever won anything, how much ect…

So at this point he asked if I played for fun, was a regular, or a pro??? I said "um.. I play for fun." Then he says, "ok so you know you are a fish."

lol I laughed..

And explains that there are mainly 3 types of poker players. 1. The fish, the one who plays for fun, or to gamble, 2. the regulars, the ones who have studied the game or been playing a lot of hours for years, and 3. the pros, the ones who depend on the regulars to make money. The only ones making big money are the pros, and only a few regulars make money, and the fish never win long term.

I did feel insulted by him calling me a fish without knowing me. This guy was older and told me he was a regular. I dont think I am a regular because I have phases. I'll go a month straight to the casino, and then not play for 8 months. And the studying I done is just reading, nothing major, and this website, so maybe I am a fish lol...

But I did read once that only 5% of poker players win so he might not be lying...

i'd probably be like no there are only two types of players... the *******s and non *******s... you're obviously in the *******s group.

Some of the best players I've ever played with only play once a week or not very often anymore and only for fun/enjoyment as they spend most of their time being successful on other ventures.

Well that casino we played was 1/2nl $40 buy in. Whoever plays at that level with a $6 dollar rake every hand, are the fish. But if anything I do only play for fun now. My dreams of being a poker pro have been broken with all the coolers.... I lost to 4 of a kind more than a few times, or those stupid straight flushes...Or had Aces cracked all in pre flop... I need to find a home game or a casino with a lower rake..

One of the hallmarks of a fish is that they loiter outside of liquor stores, so I think he had a strong soulread on you.

These type of stories seem to leave things out much of the time.

Any possibility that you might have made some comments about another player's actions while at the table? Or you were telling the table about how great you are? Berating the dealer? Seems pretty random that some guy remembers another player at his table and decides to confront him about his bad play in front of a liquor store. I'd figure a guy drinking a beer in front of a liquor store was already near rock botton.

Regs are usually the biggest fish. They don’t lose as quickly as fish, but they have so many leaks and superstitions that they can’t wait to tell the whole table about.

Outside of a liquor store you say? I think he was applying the saying “you drink like a fish.”

Of course he’s wrong. There are many types in the poker room:

Regs are the folks who buy in using assorted bills found in couch cushions and play until they have enough points to buy a sandwich or win enough for gas for the ride home.

Pros are regs who win enough for gas both ways, and bring their own sandwiches.

Fish are the folks with actual jobs, who pay money for food at the casino and have credit cards for gas.

Degenerate scumbags are the people you see drinking from paper bags in front of liquor stores.

wow lol thanks for the replies, I tried to respond earlier but I could not.
Dick Tracy:

Well the reason I do this once in a while, not even once a week, is because it is cheaper than hitting a bar. I would spend more at a bar or casino, so having one beer in a place near my home is not bad for me.

I dont even talk in the cardrooms unless I know someone there which is rare.... the most talking I ever done is maybe tell a player if I had it or not, or ask.. also we discussed hands after they happened or we talk sports, that is it. And I remember this dude because we played recently and it was a long session and he was talking to others not me.

This is funny, and again it was literally one beer. I did not panhandle or do anything illegal to get this money. It's been months since I dont this. My life is not that bad, I like it, even though it is not easy. I do things, I help others, clean record, very respectful, but if you feel I am degenerate for drinking one beer outside a liquor store, then that's on you. The only different is instead of having that drink in a restaurant, casino, or bar is that at this liquor store I will cost me less than 5 bucks. I am not rich and this location is not bad.

funny again. I cant say I am not a fish because overall I loss money. but the point of me sharing this was just to point out the dude called me a fish. and I wanted to vent. And he said it after some small talk like if I knew I was a fish.

But now I am a fish and a degenerate lol thanks for the support guys...

Nice little low key thread here ... Definitions are certainly opinionated in these cases and as is the case in our wonderful English language multiple words can mean the same thing to different people.

For me, a Fish generally means 'donator' and would describe both a new Player as well as a 'slow' Player. These Players either just don't know the game or don't catch onto the game in a manner that improves their chances of success.

A Reg is someone who plays 'a lot' ... it's as simple as that. I think it would be unwise to attach a skill level to a Reg, although one 'should' have higher expectations from a Reg than a typical/average Rec Player.

Gamblers are typically known as Whales IMO. The typical definition of Whale is a Player with deep pockets/multiple BIs and is just dumping chips in as one might a pit game. One could also argue that a Whale might have some skills and just tie it to the $$ as well.

You could also say that each hand played might change your opinion ...

Player piles in with AK on A64 and gets snapped off by a set ... FISH?
Player piles in with AK 'knowing' opponent calls off Ax light, shows AJ ... REG? PRO?

As I've said many times before, figuring out how each Player is 'currently' playing is very important to a successful session. A well rounded REG may turn into a FISH-Tilt Master after a couple of bad beats ... change your game accordingly. GL

PS ... In a very important note ... One can be the 'Reg' in one game and the Fish in another ... basic poker rule

If you only play pocket pairs and AQs+ and play TAG AF, that same bad reg won't even have the opportunity to tell you that you're a shark in the liquor store parking lot because you'll have already moved up to Walmart's parking lot by that time.

The fish is the guy who finds the one guy he can beat and tells him to get better or stick to blackjack. Op, you're welcome at my table anytime

fyp

I know too many full time players that bring their own food, and their wife has a good paying career.
