How would you handle? Confused villain mucks winning (?) hand How would you handle? Confused villain mucks winning (?) hand

Live 5/5, Bicycle Casino, Bell Gardens CA

Player raises to 20. I call on button with 65o. SB calls. We are 1k effective.
Flop J43ssh. Checks to me, I bet 45, SB calls, raiser folds.
Turn Th. SB checks, I bet 90, he calls.
River 3. SB checks, I bet 400.

SB thinks, then gathers a weird mixed assortment of yellow (5) and purple (25) chips and pushes them in. It's about 200 or less. I show 65o. Another player says "I don't think he's calling with 6 high!" SB, thinking I've open folded, mucks his hand and waits for the pot.

Table clarifies that he didn't raise but just called. He makes a minor protest. Dealer says "you mucked your hand." He's forced to complete the call and puts the rest of the 400 in.

Dealer pushes chips to me.

What would you do?

His bad. Should have protected his hand.

Basically your bluff got through and netted you an extra 400. I wouldn't worry about anything.

I wouldn't do anything.

Obviously you should keep the money because you were the only person with a properly tabled hand at showdown.

By rule, villain screwed himself pretty badly, and the pot is yours. As a floor, I might rule 1 my way into saying he didn't have to pay the additional 200, but I might not.

If you wanted to rebate him something, that's entirely up to you. For me it would depend on the opponent and my long term relationship with him, and whether I think he would do the same in a similarly ****ed up situation.

Players should learn never to muck or (worse yet) turbomuck their hands until they are getting the pot, even if they think they are the only hand left, but especially if the other guy tables his hand. That is an expensive lesson for him to learn, but learn it he must.

Yeah this is 100% his fault for not remembering that you bet and he called. You followed protocol by showing first.

Thanks for your feedback everyone. It was a weird spot for me and the only time I can remember feeling guilty stacking chips.

He asked me to color up 300, racked up and left before I could count out his stacks. Turns out his stacks were not even and he'd give me about 330 in exchange for 300.

I chased him down, gave him his 30 and took 200 out of my pocket and refunded him that. He was appreciative and said he'd never played in this casino before and thought I'd bet 100, not 400. He fully admitted it was his fault and was grateful for the rebate. He said he had A3.

This might be the shortest 'decent' thread ever at 91 minutes!!

IMO well done on returning the 30 and adding on the 200. There have been other threads about Players unknowingly mucking winning hands or Dealer's pulling in holdings prematurely.

Sounds like this guy was confused about the color of the chips and actually thought he was raising? The comment about 'not calling with 6 high' was actually directed at him when he may have thought it was directed at you not calling his supposed raise.

I think the poker gods were working a bit here, would you have chased him down with the 200 if the stacks hadn't been too high? GL

Happy to be part of 2+2 history!

Yeah, he was confused about the color. It wasn't totally clear but it does seem like the player's comment further confused him. I didn't actually see him muck and only learned of that when the dealer said something after we indicated he had called and not raised.

Thanks for the kudos and agree about the poker gods working their magic. I'm not totally sure if I refund him otherwise but am glad I had the opportunity to do so.

Player who said something should be warned but no casino ever does this or anything. I wouldn’t do anything his responsibility and I wouldn’t take anything if I made the mistake so I don’t offer anything when I’m on the other end

Another player says "I don't think he's calling with 6 high!" ....

It was HU at Showdown with OP ... other Players should refrain from saying anything until both hands are properly tabled. Only OP had tabled his hand at the time of the comment, which contributed to the confusion of the V (which may stand for victim in this thread)!

Plenty of discussion in this forum about when a Dealer (primarily) or another Player should announce a hand or make a comment during Showdown. GL

I hereby retract my comment. Missed the "another player" part.

Yes - this is terrible. If you are NOT in the hand, don't COMMENT about the hand until the dealer starts the next hand!!!
