How smelly before you say something or move? How smelly before you say something or move?

Buddy to my right smells bad, nasty combination of BO and rank breath.

Table is great though and buddy to his right is deep and terrible.

What is my play?

Seat change, or go buy some cologne and spritz him as you walk by.

Talk to the floor discreetly away from the table if it's offensive. I've done this twice in all my time playing poker and both times the floorman talked to the player discreetly away from the table and the player left.

It's a tough situation that should be handled gently because you don't want to be an ******* to the smelly person, but when it gets to a certain level something needs to be done.

I was a regular in a room and we had donator that would come in once or twice a week and always smelled of BO. One day it was so bad a few people complained to floor and they talked to him and he left but he also never returned. I think some people don't realize how bad they smell and if it is pointed out to them in such a setting it would be embarrassing enough to never return. If he is your buddy I would suck it up or change seats and talk to him outside of card room. If he is neither a donator or your buddy then talk to floor.

When a floor talks to someone in this situation, it's going to be perceived as "We don't want your business, get out". The person's reaction is either going to be to leave and never return, or he's going to say "FU, it's a free country" and stink it up even more, if possible. It's never going to be what you want, him improving his hygiene.

So many people lately with awful breath. What's up with that? And they're always the ones who never want a piece of gum when you offer it to them. "No, I'm good, thanks." "Um, no, you're really not, please, take the gum!"

I've made not-so-subtle hand motions if the guy next to me made it near impossible for me to even think straight. And although I've yet to say something to them directly, I would be ok if someone else told them that they needed a shower and a good dentist. I don't think their "feelings" need to be spared, they're not thinking of anyone else, so, wtf. You can correct these issues. But electing to partake in a hobby where you'll be in very close quarters with others for hours on end, is totally rude, thoughtless, and disgusting.

My favorite local has a list of rules posted -- including a rule regarding personal hygiene. I just asked to have the rule invoked: a guy had apparently not bathed all week and was wearing a polyester shirt that reeked of BO that could be smelled two tables away! The stench was so strong that you could cut cubes of it out of the air. There was no problem getting floor to deal with the guy.

When I've had this come up while flooring it is usually the dealer who tells me about it (they are a lot less tolerant of it unless it's a real George). It is awkward to deal with but we do it by discreetly telling the player we've had complaints and if they don't do something to fix it. They'll have to leave and not come back until they do.

I feel that most of the people I've talked to genuinely don't know it's a problem. Ive had a few blowups, but mostly people fix the problem (head to the bathroom and freshen up, go home and clean up) and seem to be embarrassed by it.

As a player I discreetly tell the floor as soon as I realize the smell isn't going away. If nothing is done I go over the floor's head (my dad worked at a sewage plant, I have a very low tolerance for gross smells).

Lucky for me he didn't stay long so i just suffered in silence.

I like the discretely spritz him with cologne suggestion.

If i get stuck in that situation again I'll probably just to talk to a supervisor.

Being in management in my day job, i have had to deal with similar situation before. Sucked. Was much more delicate as you need to continue working with the person everyday.

Don't spritz anyone with cologne. First of all, if he catches you there might be an even bigger problem(who knows how people react to certain things). And second, the cologne is likely to just make the BO smell 10x worse.

At least a breath mint might help for a ~little while. Offer him that.

I was in tournament this past weekend and I was in the 9 seat. We had a very chatty dealer and every time he opened his mouth his breath almost made me vomit. I couldn't take it anymore and just put my shirt up over my nose until he got tapped out.

I think you shouldn't do a anything. If he's the biggest fish and would drop 1k after another he could smell like garbage and nobody would care because of the money he is dropping....
Some people smells bad, they came after work, they came drunk.... I sat also next to one who smells really bad. I smoked one cigarette after cigarette to neutralize the smell. Happily after two hours the torture was over and the guy left. In such moments I just think how great online poker is Haha.

I recall one occasion that the guy next to me kept going outside to smoke, would come back & basically bathe himself in hand sanitizer & then would get some Cuban coffee.....as if the smell of his nasty cigarette & coffee breath mixed with that generic hand sanitizer wasn't bad enough, he decides to order fried calamari!! (Yes, fried calamari in a poker room!!).......it got to the point where I could hardly breath.

He didn't eat all the calamari, the waitress comes by & he says to take it away, to which she replies "no, you've hardly ate anything"......I quickly replied loud enough to where they could all hear me "Yes, please take that away. It stinks enough here already without that crap"

Fried calamari doesn't even smell. How do you feel about Kimchi? Or a lot of the other Asian food that many players eat at the table? To me, those are WAY worse. But, it's *food* and people have their right to eat what's allowed at the table without being insulted for it.

Telling someone: "yeah, take it away, it already smells like crap in here" is extremely ballsy...and rude.

only cigarette smoke is a legitimate complaint in that post. Coffee, hand sanitizer, and calamari shouldn't get you to the point of hardly breathing.

any one of them on their own isn't bad.....but the extreme combination of all three was pretty bad......

of course, it's hard to explain a smell or a combination of smells.....

Id move if it was offensive, but I once got sat next to some half dead smelling guy at a mtt and I couldnt do anything. Actually, I doused my wrists in axe and held them against my face.

Instead of bringing in more chemicals to the party, you might be better off trying something more organic and/or that has a natural aroma, like, holding an orange up to your nose(think Johnny Chan) or any kind of citrus fruit for that matter.

I'm always amazed that we even need to have these discussions. Scary.

We had a guy in my local room that stunk so bad that our eyes were watering and he was a tight nit. finally the floor asked him to leave and he ended up knocking a bunch of our chips off the table and got banned. it was worth the hassle of figuring out whose chips were whose just to get him out.

Wait until you've smelled cheap, bordering on the too old, calamari fried in dirty burnt grease, then you'll rethink that position.
