There's a mediocre movie from the early 70's called Rancho Deluxe. Jeff Bridges, Sam Waterston, and Harry Dean Stanton (all IMPOSSIBLY young!) are ranch hands planning to steal a bunch of cattle from their employer. The rancher has hired a doddering old fool (Slim Pickens) as his security chief. The young guys laugh at the old goofball, thinking this job will be a piece of cake.

At the end of the movie, when they've loaded the stolen cattle onto a stolen truck and begin to make their get-away, they don't get ten feet--the doddering old man is waiting for them. His doddering was all an act.

One of the young guys asked him, "How did you know it was us?"

The old guy hit him with a line that has served me well throughout life: "Son...it's ALWAYS an Inside Job!"

It was a set up. Either the friend or a casino employee set the robbery up. Dont be so gullible.
You're making some pretty wild assumptions. We won't know what happened until OP gives us the rest of the story as I requested.

YIKES!

I can see how this spirled into those potentials so let me clear the story up for you, but before i do... a casino employee? REALLY? That is the most absurd thing i ever heard. Its a casino, 12 thousand in a box,a highroller section to be more precise is NOTHING. It was Mohegan Sun Casino by the way, in the "blue pit" in the middle of where all the highroller blackjack tables are. IT wasnt even in the poker room.. Its common people walk in and out of there holding 5 thousand dollar chips. Nothing new there.

HE kept it there because the poker cage is slow and busy and takes too long to get service alot of the time. For those wondering why he had the whole amount and not only 2500, surely dont know poker variance. IT is common to be in for 5 buy ins in those games sometimes, and what if im not there or able to reload him? Its perfectly reasonable for him to have 12k in a box and go there if he needed it.

We were eating at johnny rockets and i told him i think we should move over to Foxwoods which is 20 minutes away. The action been fantastic there lately and he said he didnt care where he played. So it went from eating to the box area, i even went with him we counted it up and we walked out of the gambliing area as we always do, we werent followed nothing crazy like that. We went to the parking garage and started to drive

FWIW neither of us were on a phone during any of this, theres zero percent chance he or I "set it up" We got to the dunkin donuts thats right before foxwoods to findout they were closed, it was 4 am(damn i wish i didnt wanna grab a red gatorade before foxwoods), we went to pullout of the parking lot and someone was standing there with his hands up. I beeped my horn and the guy wouldnt move. I beeped again and he didnt move. I got out of my car and walked toward him and was like"Are you ok? do you need me to call someone?" He was wearing a Du Rag and spanish and whistled over and 2 other guys came over. They demandned "keys keys" Their intention was to just rob the car. They pulled my friend out and thru him down and then waved a gun at us and told us to give up our phones and wallets. One guy went over to the vehicle and noticed it was stick and he got angry and didnt know how to drive it. The other 2 looked young and probably didnt know how to drive. One of them said"empty your pockets inside out, and we both did and i dropped my phone and like 80 bucks cash i only had on me. My friend frozeup and reluctlantly did the same and the wad of 100s just came on out . The biigger guy in charge just motioned to them to pick it up and they ran away back toward the highway, So yes, the money was technically on my friend. We drove to Foxwoods and called police from the security over by the hotel area.

I never once said i want him to be responsible in the OP i just listed possibilities
He offered to bring makeup to 9500 i told him that wasnt fair to him, the only real fair solution is I got robbed. The money was mine, it doesnt really matter whose hands it was in. I just learned a valuable life lesson out of all this.

An interestin fact also is when i emptied my pockets i had a 500 dollar chip with me too and the guy who pickedup my phone had to have seen it. No clue why he wouldnt want to take it

If you think its completely absurd that a casino employee tipped off a friend that you were leaving with a large amount of cash, then you are very naive. It may not have happened this time but it happens. I know 3 different people who have been robbed leaving a poker room after large wins. People sometimes stand around the cashier cage looking to see who leaves with lots of cash. If you're stopping for Donuts or Gatorade at 4 am with $12000 on you, then you are just dumb.

A guy wearing a du rag blocks your car at 4am and you got out? Jesus Christ Man! You are really naive. I dont want to sound like Im blaming the victim but honestly you are lucky to be alive. The vast majority of murders that arent drug related occur
in situations just like this. Late at night, at places with nobody else around. ATMs, car washes, ect. The Dunkin Donuts was closed so I assume there was nobody else nearby.

Also, if its common for your friend to be in the game for 5 buy ins, I see why he has needed a stake for 5 years. Ive been in the game for 5 buy ins exactly 1 time in over 3000 hours and in that session I got overflushed twice, I got set over setted once and I was playing badly on top of that.

Really, and with 12K on them! If that was me I would have drove right around him. If I couldn't, I would have slowly drove through him and moved him out of the way.

I don't see why the horse can't play in both of the rooms. They're 20min apart with no other casino for hours. Why was he only bound to play in one room? Well if it was me staking someone I would prefer if one room is bad to play in the other.

Apparently this guy needs the entire stake at one room cuz its common for him to be stuck so badly in any given day. LOL

I might refrain from calling the potential of an inside job "absurd" and lecturing people about "poker variance" when you have the propensity to hop out of your car at 4:00 am to help the shady dude blocking your exit from an empty parking lot.

Yeah it really looks like you are testing a screenplay for kinks that need to be ironed out. There are like five points that would distract an audience and pull them out of the movie because "Why would anyone do that?!".

But if it is real, then bpb's post extremely applies to you.

While OP was pretty naive in terms of street smarts and staking arrangements, $12k for 2/5 is not absurd.

Edit: thought this was 2/5 PLO for some reason. It's high but not absurd for 2/5 NL.

The initial post claimed you were searched. I know its nit-picking but being told to drop your wallet and cell is not a search. If they were just stealing the car and had no knowledge of the money, Your friend should have dropped his cell and wallet but the 12k just happened to come out?

Also, just ate at Johnny Rockets at 330 am and need a red gatorade from a closed DD 15 minutes later? No idea why you would make this stop w 12k on you. How does a guy block you in an empty parking lot of a close donut shop?

Its not the size of the roll that's absurd. What's crazy is needing it all at once which would be the main reason to keep all of the money at the casino and/or move it all to the other room.

OK this is just silly behavior. Getting out of your car at 4 AM with some sketchy fellow
on foot blocking you? And with 12K or more on you? Seriously OP what were you thinking? Despite your totally goofy actions (as you describe) the 12k situation with your associate seem to be handled well by you.

I don't believe this happened the way it was described. I don't know of anyone in their right mind, carrying 12K in cash, who would get out of their car in the middle of the night in a secluded parking lot of a closed establishment to talk with a sketchy looking individual who put up his hands to stop you. I mean did you think he was going to ask you for directions?

I dont wanna be rude to you guys but, what the hell is wrong with some of you?
I have read 2+2 for awhile and whenever stories get posted in general or a situation rises people all of a sudden find a way to bash on a victim. Have you ever been suddenly surprised before by something that happened? Have you ever had a gun held to you and told to do something? Panick ensues and you freezeup.

MikeyStarrs post was absurd. Lets see where can i begin? Yes it is absurd to think a casino emplployee tipped anyone off. First of alll we werent even in a poker room, we were in the direct middle of a highstakes pit area where people bet 5k 10k a HAND. Near all the 100 dollar slot machines. We went into a heavily guarded area opened out private booth counted money, could have walked out with 5 dollars or 500k nobody will ever know. We've done this 100s of times. Then from there you have to walk thru foodcourts/slot machine areas and out to the parking lot. We werent followed.

We went thru the drivethru yeah it was dark and when you pull up to windows at drivethrus its usually a tight space up ahead. Well when i saw the dude waving i thought he needed help. I thought something was really wrong with him. I didnt want to just"drive around him" would you really just drive around someone and speedoff? iwas gonna call police. I wish i had stayed in the car but i dunno if itd make a difference who knows.

Then you question the "is 12k needed for this game" let me begin and tell you he stays there for 5 nights a week maybe more. Im not there. At Mohegan its an 800 dollar buy in and people buy in for more, all the time when people move to "the main game" He does too, He has bought in for 2500 before . Now that i think of it 12k isnt enough. At the end of the day it doesnt really matter how much he keeps in the box. Just play whats needed has always been good and its ok to stay on the safe side. What if i decided to have him play a 1650 mtt or go to a juicy cashgame somewhere there when i wasnt with him? This whole"12k" is too much is ridiculous.

Also, having 12k is something that shouldnt be looked at as an "omg" thing like we're walking around with soooooo much money. I normally dont, and actually i didnt that night I had 80 bucks on me, my friend was the one in the car with all the money, and it was a simple one casino to another type of thing we dont do that all the time, we just were very unlucky and ran into some dudes trying to jack my vehicle.

"why would he only play one room" This is not relevant and to give more details is the games are better at Foxwoods and i get free rooms at foxwoods 5 nights a week and dont at Mohegan so it saves us like 400 a week. Good enough reason?

Ok, ill nit pick too like you guys. Nope i didnt have 12k in cash so i got out of the car as a worried citizen, my friend stayed on the car with the money and i went out. He was forced out and out of his control. Yeah we got "Searched" as in both were told to put hands in air and empty all our pockets inside and out. Thats consider being searched in my opinion. No chance to hide anything.

Lesson learned. Next time, you take your phone, dial 911, and ask the police to come because it appears somebody needs help, and you don't want to take a risk by getting out of your car to help them at 4am. Then, crack the window, and yell out to them "Don't worry, I've called the police to come and help you."

If they're bad guys, they run. If they're fine people who need help, they say thanks.

Cheers, Greg Raymer (FossilMan)

In my experience, every card game/casino related robbery was an inside job and not a "they got lucky and caught the victim with their entire roll."

We have, as a group, come down pretty hard on OP.

Have you looked up the hours of the Dunks to see if they were supposed to be closed? Not to throw more fuel but uh, Google says the one before Foxwoods is open 24 hours a day if you were looking for another setup angle.

Thanks Greg Fossilman , always liked and respected you and i heard you got robbed awhile ago and you fought them off and theywent running right? Well I dont believe that was possible in my situation and i frozeup i was scared. Who knows what these people were capable of?
Anyway, hen you see someone in need of help isnt your initial reaction to help? I beeped my horn and got no response, i did it again and he just stood there; I just wanted to try to speak verbally with him, he could have been high on meth, hallucinating. Who the hell knows. What if he walked out into oncoming traffic? YOu cant just let someone die and you have to intervene at some point right?
Also if i opened my window and said"cops coming dont worry" this potentially could have gotten them to panic, shoot me and try to get my car. Theres way too many unknowns when this stuff happens and i doubt anybody handles these situations "the correct way""the safest way"

"it doesnt look like the case could be solved"
-Well the 3 guys arent on camera and no other reports came in that night about anything bad happening around the area.cops have nothing to dust for prints and they vanished into thin air .

hours of dunkin donuts operation being open 24 hrs? Well then thats just another mistake by me i guess I drove thru because nobody answered when i waited at the window. Im sure they were in bathroom or lazy or something at that hour,

OP probably grew up in a small town like me where you can do stuff like leave the house/car unlocked anywhere and never have to worry about any theft. Yeah, it was dumb to get out of the car, but analyzing the story to death is a waste of everybody’s time. If you think it’s unrealistic consider it a hypothetical scenario, or just don’t reply.

first imagine this is the start of the arrangement. its all your money and he isnt responsible for any of it. its the same situation just farther along in the deal. he is just playing your money not his. just because you let him carry it doesnt make him liable for it unless it was his fault it got taken.
and you seemed to be the one who put you two in danger and made a dumb move and got robbed. hope you learned something here.

wouldn't be a setup, like it was described by either party.
