There is a fine line between "good natured banter" and "bullying". You need to properly respond and if you don't then banter will likely cross over into bullying because you're an easy target.

You can respond with humor like others mentioned or you can needle them back. And to answer your question - yes, bullies bully because of their own insecurities. Your job is to make sure they don't pick you for bullying because you're seen as a timid, easy target.
