Faded Spade has a nice 4 color deck now. Tried it at my 5x a week home game and there was way too much bitching to bother. Mostly olds crying it was too hard to see or they don't like change or it was actually harder to see the 4 color cards vs the old ones.

I missed this thread the first time around. I have thoughts that no one has mentioned yet:

--IIRC, Caro says his efforts to introduce 4CD flopped, mostly because he chose poor hues/shades. Well, mostly because people hate change.

--Anecdote for you to consider: the unhappiest table I ever saw was the day I came to work to find our room had gone from blue+red decks, to brown+purple. Yes, I mean the BACKS of the cards were a new color. You've never seen a group of players so upset. Literally unable to unclench their fists--literally!

So GL trying to change something.

(Though now that I think about it...They acted that way when ShuffleMaster came to town...and eventually, they got over it!)

Beyond basic tools like a hoe or a knife, I cannot think of many things we use in every day life that have remained unchanged since a hundred years before the Pilgrims spied Plymouth Rock. But if you're sure you can improve on it now, then you do you.
Here are some other things that at some point we could say have stood the test of time:
Kings and Queens,
5 card draw,
the bow and arrow,
horse drawn carriages,
black tattoos,
slavery,
the middle ages,
priests who can't marry.

Personally I would hate 4 color decks. I resist change like the plague. And yet the plague went away.

I have twice mistaken suits that were of one color (once red once black) so you would think I would be in favor of four color decks. But if not for extremely embarrassing moments, where would memories come from? And with them stories at the table. Which bore and torment my opponents to the point where they can only see red. So in those moments why give them four colors? It could only pull them back from the edge.

That must have been a LO8 table. The unhappiest table in the room is always the LO8 table.

Normally, you would be correct, but this was a very small room, only one table going that morning, it was hold'em.

You could not believe how upset these folks were. One woman's body language was so tense, I thought she might seize up. I tried to console her with, "You know, it's not the worst thing in the world."

Through clenched teeth she replied, "Yes...it...is!"

Oh, ok, my bad. I didn't appreciate the hardship. I'll concede the point, this IS the worst thing in the world. Worse than disease, worse than famine, worse than genocide....

I remember the first time I saw a 4 color deck online. I hated it for no other reason than it looked different. It took me about half an hour of forcing myself to try it before I suddenly fell in love with it. Converted into live play that would be like 4 hours of play time. I dont see the OMC's or anybody else for that matter tolerating 4 hours of mental anguish before their kneejerk reaction wears off and they realize they actually like it.

I don't have a cite on this but I heard it on a poker stream that supposedly printers could only (easily) print in black ink and so for a long time in the 19th century and before, decks of playing cards were all in black. Then Bible printers would print in black except for Jesus' name which would be in red, so they had the capacity to print in both red and black, thus the 2 color deck. Now we have the capability to print in 4 colors. There is a 0% chance if poker/card games were being invented today that we'd play with 2 color decks. It's a vestige of history.
