Fo color decks in live play

Since playing pretty much strictly online the past year, I've gotten real used to four color decks.

In casinos, do they ever have Omaha in four color decks? Would a request for a change to a four color deck be akin to asking for a spritz of H?

Are there places were a fo color deck is default?

Or is this basically an online thing

I've never seen a four color deck live, but I'd love to be at the table when you request to swap one in to see how it plays out.

4 color decks live will probably never happen. Too many dealers tend to pitch cards a little too high, and all an observant player needs is a flash of color to gain an edge.

These were tried out live and generally rejected years ago. There may be a few places which use them today, but I'm not aware of any. Perhaps others here know of some?
You will probably get a laugh if you ask for one in any of the rooms I have played in; everyone will assume that you're joking.

Probably pointless to ask, but you really never know unless you do.

I have seen them in play a few years ago but I can't remember where. The traditionalist in me hates them because it looks like a child's game. The half-blind in me loves them because I can actually tell what the cards are without being in the 5 seat.

If I made 4 color decks I would definitely try to target stud tournaments before any other forms of poker.

Also, tradition is a weird thing. Traditionally there were no face cards. Why romanticize exactly the way things were at one specific point in time?

I've heard this argument a lot (I think Mason Malmuth said they tried them once and abandoned them for this reason) but it doesn't make sense to me. Why maintain two color decks instead of black and white?

A black and white deck would be a pain when it comes time to read hands.
Two color deck helps that a lot and a color flashing doesn't give away nearly as much info that a four color deck would.

I'm not all that well-versed in information theory and all, but it seems like narrowing the card to two suits would give away literally half as much information as narrowing it to one suit.

When I think "nearly" it's 90%, maybe 80%, never 50%.

I remember Mike Caro speaking on this years ago (Pre-boom). Like others have said, tried and quickly abandoned due to tradition as well as card flashing.

Dealers could try not being **** at their job and just deal the cards flat.

The ones that are good at their jobs don't deal where you play.

Re: Fo color decks in live play

There are plenty of good dealers here, but there are also some who roll the deck and pitch at a 45 degree angle.

Not sure why we can't have 4 color decks just because a small percentage of dealers refuse to do their jobs properly.

It was mostly because most players absolutely hated them.

If I was a poker room manager in one of the smaller rooms in Las Vegas, I would definitely try it. If even 5% of the poker players liked them over the standard cards, you'd fill 6-7 tables which might propel you from being an also-run to at least middle of the pack.

Re: Fo color decks in live play

Thanks for the replies, legitimately curious. It's kinda funny, but the same reason you guyz stated (feeling like a kids' game, playskool blocks) was the reason I stayed away from it until I thought I had a friggin heart flush and it was diamonds on the board. Woops.

Switched to four color for online and haven't looked back.

Didn't think about the card flashing aspect being a detriment in getting fo color decks implemented

Once legal online poker expands further in the US, I would try to get an online poker site to sponsor a weekly four-color deck tournament. Then I would see if cash game players request to also be allowed to use the four-color deck.

Re: Fo color decks in live play

The four-color deck was tried out in the '90s by Mike Caro and he reported that inexperienced players like it. A vocal group that was probably not a majority hated it. My guess is that some gamblers blamed it for their bad luck in the same way that they would blame their seat or the dealer. Another attempt at the four-color deck was derailed by blue and green being difficult to distinguish.

Time has passed since then and maybe attitudes have changed.

Re: Fo color decks in live play

Would love to see 4 color decks used. So much easier to identify the suits. Some cardrooms are so dark, it can be tough with 2 color decks.

And while we're on the subject, why not use the large print everywhere ? Makes it much easier to see them.

Yes, I'm over 60
