Hi, I'm a widower ready to retire and hit the road to finally play some if not all of the major WSOP Circuit tournaments. I have money to buy an RV (probably a fifth wheel). I'm looking for a few good men or women, age 60+, as much into Texas Hold 'Em as I am. I've never done RVing before, so I need at least one person who knows all the ins and outs. We'd share expenses and see a lot of the country. Only easy going gentle people please, this is meant to have a good time and maybe get lucky here and there. I'm in New Hampshire but free to travel.

Good luck in the retirement endeavors. However, before dropping the money on a purchase of any manner of RV, I would HIGHLY recommend that you rent/lease one. Much like boats, they can be massive money pits...you would NOT be happy if you dropped the cash on one and THEN decided that driving/towing your home around really blew chunks or simply that you would rather put those funds into hotel rooms when you chose to travel.

I'm not 60+ but would love to do this.

However, because of gas prices, long driving times, and no RV parking or RV parks in close proximity of most casinos, I'm not sure it's practical to do the WSOP circuit this way.

If the purpose is to enjoy RVing that's great, but if the purpose is to travel at low expense it would be cheaper to get a few people to share hotel rooms. RV parks with hookups cost almost as much as Motel 6, and free boondocking spots are few and far between in most metro areas.

Have you researched the logistics of it, or do you know of people who travel the circuit in an RV? If they do it I bet they use a stealth van that gets 18 mpg and can be parked anywhere.

Anyone driving the WSOP circuit is going to have to long driving times. Most casinos have very large parking lots and OP could park his 5th wheel in the back of the parking lot easily.

RV parks with hookups avg around $35-$40/night which is cheaper than Motel 6. I dont know if youve been in a newer 5th wheel but they are nice as hell inside. Dramatically nicer than any Motel 6. In fact they are nicer than most 4 star hotels. They also have full kitchens. Nicer than a lot of houses. Cooking your own food saves big money over going from hotel to hotel and eating out al the time.

You can park an RV for free (boondock) in almost every Walmart in the Country.

First of all, thanks to all who have given helpful advice here, much appreciated. As I said, I'm a newbie to RV travel. One of the reasons I'm considering doing it that way is that just before my wife passed, we had sold our home. So I'm in a temporary location, and considering the RV as something I can both travel the poker circuit with and then after that make into my "home" wherever I decide to settle.

Maybe I need to relax the age restriction. I was preferring people that are retired or semi-retired. I've put this same posting on some RV sites as well, not getting any responses. So to the person I'm replying to, what is your age grouping and would you seriously consider this, and are you in a position to actually do it, if I didn't have the age restriction?

Please be careful doing this with a person you barely know.

RV seems kind of large and would cost so much in gas. What about one of those sleeper vans? Smaller but can accommodate one person comfortably and would cost significantly less in gas.

Yes, I PM'd you but don't know if you can read or write private messages on a new account.

Instead of starting off in an RV why not start by travelling by car/hotels, then if you really like driving the WSOP circuit you can buy the RV later?

The RV you'll want for travelling will probably be different than the one you'll want to use as a long-term home. For your first RV it's best to buy something used and cheap because most people who buy RVs to live in end up buying a different RV after a year or two, so your first RV probably won't be your home later anyway.

Do the trip solo my friend. I recently did a West Coast trip and stopped at nearly every single poker room from LA to Vancouver in my Toyota Corolla. By getting 45 mpg and being in a lighter car I saved plenty to afford motel rooms and AirBnBs. It’s also so much more fun driving a smaller car and you can stop to see all the little treasures and side roads easily. If you are set on the trailer or RV which is totally fine look into something fuel efficient like a Striker Van. $100 a day in gas is a ton of money and RVs really are huge money pits for repairs like boats as mentioned

Sorry for your loss and I certainly understand your itch to travel and 'go for it'.

From just the 'life' side of this, I've seen a few cases where folks wanted to do the same thing ... they were done after 9 months to a year. This is why considering used 'equipment' might be the way to go. You know how a car depreciates when it drives off the lot, eh? Welcome to the wonderful world of RVs and similar ...

From the poker side make sure you consider all the poker tours .. WSOPc, HPT, MSPT, even WPT when looking at your journeys. You should find a much less traveled path than just chasing one tour as it makes it's way from stop to stop. Certainly stopping along the way at casinos that aren't currently offering big time tournaments, but they are near landmarks, should be considered also. When our new casino opened a lady and her mom stopped in their RV and ended up staying in the parking lot for 4 months before they moved on!!

I think it will be very difficult to find someone you mesh with so quickly. You will find soon enough some tour regulars and you may find one or two that may hop on for your current leg of travel, but not be tied to you 'permanently'. GL

Wow. Awesome. I wish we could join you right now, but both in early 50s and still working full time.

However, this is what my husband and I are going to do when we retire. Buy a nice 5th wheel and travel the country playing poker, snowboarding, and hitting the beach. We have an RV that we've taken to quite a few places, including casinos, but it's old and retired. BTW, if we can get enough money for our house, we are going to sell it, buy the 5th wheel now, get five acres for horses and dogs, and live in the 5th wheel!

Good luck. I hope you find some fun people to join you. See you in about 10 years

Also, RVing is pretty easy and most people in RV camps are more than willing to help (and are very friendly), so go for it -- even if you go on your own! You will meet great people along the way.

Dream thief!!!

Cannot locate the title, but there was a recent documentary on a Black Jack card counting guy going across the country mostly in a RV.

He did not seem to have issues except when tossed.

I notice parking at most casinos for buses and such. Will they run off a patron because of his mode of transportation?

If you are spending money, they will not run you off!

(Seriously, I've stayed at a couple of casinos in the truck/bus/RV parking and never seen anyone bother anybody. They want you there -- that's why they have the parking. Now, if it says "busses only" you might want to ask.)

I saw a Class B Winnebago yesterday.

It looked sweet until I saw the price tag... well over $100K before any extras.

For my wife and myself it would be as much travel and leisure.

I have enough odd hobbies. Painting, dabble in numismatics, and love poker.

Often dreamed of a multi purpose, multi year road trip.

Coin shows, poker rooms, and Americas great outdoor treasures.

I say go for it if it is a multi purpose goal.

As much as I hate to fly, rent vehicles, motels... $120K goes a long way.

If you're looking to travel by RV, a motorhome is possibly the most expensive way possible to do it. You will still need local transportation when you set the RV up in an RV park, so most people end up towing a car behind the motorhome. With a motorhome, you are buying an engine, transmission, and and drivetrain ($$$$) in duplicate. It's MUCH cheaper to buy a pickup and a 5th wheel or even a travel trailer.

For comparison's sake, I could buy a used F-250 with a V10 for under $10k that is perfectly capable of towing a 10,000 lb RV - which you can also pick up used. You could get away with spending as little as $20k or $25k if you spend your money wisely.

We have an RV, but when we retire, we are getting a fifth wheel (we have the truck). However, I do love being able to get up, use the restroom, switch drivers, and even make sandwiches while driving, so I will definitely miss the RV!

You can always tow a car, which is what my dad does, but I think the fifth wheel is way more cost-effective for what you get with less hassle and maintenance.

How is switching drivers any different?

I looked at some new Mallard UltraLite weight third wheels over the weekend just for a hoot.

One was $17K and another slightly larger one was $24K

I am not a big guy but the whole thing shifted to one side upon entry. I am not a tall guy 5'9 and my head nearly touched the ceiling. At least it flexed under the weight.

My brother owned two used third wheel models of some make for his hunting club.

He said they leak, stink, and are about as bad as owning a boat... (ie "Break out Another Thousand")

We switch drivers in the RV while we are driving. That's a bit tougher in a truck

I can slip into the driver's seat on the window side while my husband slips out on the other side with the cruise control on.
