Does an underbet change the action? Does an underbet change the action?

In a NL game, I was seated in the cutoff. As I was looking to my right to follow the action, the Button folded out of turn. The Button's action caused the Small Blind to act out of turn as well, and he raised to $16. The dealer neither announced the raise nor stopped the action.

Not realizing that the Small Blind had raised, I decided to make it $10 to go when the action got to me. The Small Blind then tried to pull his bet back and raise to $50.

Did my bet change the action, thereby giving the Small Blind all of his options? Stated differently, was I obligated to call $16 or $50?

Your bet does change the action, so the sb can raise, call or fold to your 10. He makes it 50; you can call, fold, or raise.

The only way action would not be changed for him is if you make a non aggressive action (call of previous bet, fold, or check).

I am confused by your use of the term “underbet”.

Had nobody acted out of turn behind you, would you have been allowed to bet $10? If $10 was a valid betsize, your bet changed the action and SB should have all his options including making it $16 in case that constitutes a legal raise.

If $10 isn’t a legal bet in that game, chances are that $16 isn’t one either. Unless you somehow found a room that decided 8/16 would be a good limit for a NL game.

Sorry if my description was confusing. This was a 1/2 NL game. A raise to $10 would have been a legal bet. When I said "underbet," I meant it to mean that my bet ($10) was less than the action the Small Blind wanted to make it (i.e., $16).

What action was SB facing when he acted OOT, and what action was he facing after you bet? Were they the same? If not, action to him had changed.

Yes you changed the action and sb can call, fold or raise.

Action is changed, SB has raised to $50 but you're not obligated to call anything.

You 'should have' limped and held the SB to his $16 .. then came over the top for $50 or whatever depending on the number of callers.

There is a separate thread that is currently discussing whether or not it's 'right', fair or an angle to take advantage of this spot. GL
