Do I have to show my hand? Do I have to show my hand?

I always answer one of three ways:

1. I tell them I will show if they show what they are folding. Knowing what someone is willing to fold in these situations is much more valuable than knowing what someone is betting with (which can be ATC). Plus they have to hold up their end of the bargain first.

2. I tell them I will show if they tip the dealer $X. Again, they have to act (tip) first. Both of these options answer the question without showing strength or weakness.

3. I say no.

I say something similar "If you open fold a good hand I'll show, but if you're just wasting time saying goodbye to your busted flush draw I won't. Let's get the game moving"

I always use #1 for the same reason you give, and like #2, but I mostly play tourneys. I also like someone's answer that came up in one of these threads: "I might not even show if you call"

Its scummy. Either dont answer or follow thru if you say that you are gonna show. I consider it a lie and if someone did it to me, I would note them as scummy liar for future interactions.

And the act of bluffing itself is 100% not a lie. When you bet you are not just saying that you have a good hand, you are saying that you have a range of good and bad hands, or else you would never get called.

If someone asks me a question as a way to probe for information, lying about the answer is 100% within the context of the game.

It would be different if the player volunteered, unprompted, to show his hand if the other player folded.

But if the other player is going to initiate table talk, my responses should not be restricted or binding. Not scummy.

I never answer the "will you show" question. I'll usually lean back in my chair and pretend to take a nap, not saying anything. After the hand I'll tell them I never answer that Q. Sometimes I'll make the offer of one BB to the dealer for the show. If it is near the end of the night and I'm not with regs, I don't mind a show.

When I ask that Q, I could care less what the V's answer. I'm looking for how nervous they are. If they freeze, refuse to make eye contact, and they aren't a reg, it is almost always a weaker hand than repped.

So it's ok if they lie to you here?

It's poker. I don't expect an honest answer.

My more frequent Q for a read is, "do you want me to call?" I think it works better at uncovering the V's comfort level. Of course I'm not going to bother trying that with an experienced player.

I didn't read the thread, but I just wanted to reiterate that the best thing to say if someone asks "Will you show if I fold?" is "I might not even show if you call".

You are not bound to show, unless you want to avoid being a jerk. No rules against being a jerk.
