sounds good to me. no reason to have the dealer spread both decks out all over the table and hand shuffle them wasting a bunch of time

First I assume you mean the player asked for a set-up and not a single deck change.

Different casinos have different rules about when they will give a set-up. Personally I believe that set-ups should never be given on a player request that isn't based on a problem with the cards.

Getting a set-up because the cards are unlucky is a waste of time to fulfill some idiots superstitious beliefs.

Of course on problem with telling a player that they can't get a setup unless there is something wrong wioth the cards is that the player then starts damaging cards so they can ask for a set-up.

If you believe in luck, play the slot machines, they have pretty lights and make neat sounds.

If you want to play poker, stop delaying the game with calls for set ups just because the cards aren't running for you.

Besides, it's bad luck to be superstitious.

This happens A LOT where I play and it sucks . Allthough at the NL you pay every 1/2 hour so a deck change costs every player money , so all the players highly discourage it . Unless a player keeps asking or if multiple people at the table continuously ask the floor man usually does the change . If it is getting out of hand they will put a time limit on when another set up is given out .But yes they can say no and I like it when they do .

Bay101, San Jose:
Set up immediately changed for a bad card
Otherwise, set up has to be on the table for 4 hrs before they will change it in the lower limits. I think it is 2 hrs in the higher limits.

From my experience nobody's really checking to make sure the set up is fresh unless there's been a shift change of the floor manager. So often times when somebody calls for a deck change the cards are due for one. I've played +10 hours at one table and the set up was never changed. Then again I've also been at a table when it was changed twice in a session without it being caused by damaged or marked cards.

And if you ever find yourself at a table full of people you don't like ask for a new setup on your last hand of the session. Pisses everyone off as they've gotten wait 5-10 minutes for a hand while you rake up :-).

Isn't this what a great many american laws and corporate policies and procedures amount to?

I agree with PS. Deck changes because the cards are bad luck is stupid. And remember, stupid is forever. Every time I hear 'setup' I think to myself "some moron just lost a pot."

The occasional setup change is fine. The important thing is that if the cards are not damaged, they need to get used for a while before there can be a new setup.

An important note to be made regarding setups is what to do when you have a card that needs to be replaced. If your casino allows a single bad card to be replaced without a complete setup change, beware. NEVER just give out one card. Always give the entire deck (after properly marking the bad card, I fold them in half) and insist on a complete suited deck in its place. I've seen rooms where the management doesn't give a crap about what goes on in their room (usually because of their severe stupidity) who allow their dealers to give out a single card and wait for a replacement. What happens much of the time is that the dealer who takes the single card to be replaced both doesn't particularly care about what they are doing and doesn't feel that bringing this replacement card is of particularly high priority. An obvious recipe for disaster, to say the least.

Rooms that will only bring an entire setup when there's a bad card have probably been burned by this before. However, it's not necessary to replace both decks for a single bad card, just the one. Despite the time it takes to spread and shuffle a replaced deck, it's necessary to protect the game.

Dang, you beat me to it. I should have posted earlier so I could have used that line.
