I was playing in a charity game earlier this week. The event was at a local synagogue, and that was the charity we were playing for that evening. I had a very good evening, and cashed out with a little over 3200 in chips. The people running the "cage" were obviously members of the synagogue, and had never handled chips or large amounts of money before this. The guy counting the chips initially counted them as 5500, and after telling him to check again, he came up with the same amount. I then proceeded to take my chips back, and cut them out correctly to show him the actual amount. He still didn't get it but decided to just trust the amount that I told him. Then, to pay me, he gave me 2200 in 100 dollar bills loosely, and then a packet of 100's with a "$1000" clip around it. I felt it and immediately knew the clip held about about $5000 (it was probably $1000 in 20's initially). I handed it back and said "I think you paid me too much." He was in a hurry and said "It's right, we already counted it." I politely said, "do me a favor and count it in front of me." He frustratingly counted it again, realized the mistake, finally paid me the correct amount after about 25 minutes, and then pushed the tip jar in my face. I left a dollar, which did not appear to be appreciated, and left.

I'm wondering if this is a common problem with these mom and pop poker games where cashing out tends to leave the register light or too full by the end of the night. These guys seemed to be flustered, in a hurry, and bound to make huge mistakes all night long.

End humble brag

Wow I don't know an answer to your questions but that is an incredible story. I wonder if they would have even known where it went or who was responsible.

It's for charity. You should accept people are going to be super unprofessional and tip larger than you normally would.

Yikes. I guess the people playing charity events are honest. No sense supporting the charity, then walking away with thousands extra.

I suppose that staying at the 'cage' counting the cash and 'tipping' the rest would have made him happier... until the end of the night

What would you do if you went to cash out 1k and they has overpaid another player thousands and were now stuck with an empty till?

I honestly don't know, and hope I don't have to find out ever. I'm wondering what the rules are for this particular charity game that protects them. For instance, there is one armed security guard at the door for all events. If the place gets robbed, which isn't totally out of the question like it would be for a casino poker room, I'm curious who's pockets that comes out of, whether it's the charity, the organizers, insurance, or a combination. My guess would be that if the till was empty at the end of the night for a big mistake, that the party responsible would be the same one responsible for a robbery (as it would've been theft for me to take the extra money).

Commendable; The only thing you did wrong here was leave a tip.

A+ line.. I hope life will return the favour of your kind actions!!

What I do not like is the attitude of cashier.. makes me wonder if the mistake was intentional with hope of extra large tip.. I guess that is just me and my cynical nature.

I'd probably find one of the people in charge and let them know about the issue; not to get the guy in trouble but just so they put sometime else in charge. There's no sense holding a charity event if they're overpaying the players.

Good for you for taking the honest line, despite the fact that he did everything in his power to make it easy for you not to.
