I would very much prefer that innocent mistakes made by newbies are treated like this.

I don't let it slide. I politely inform them why it's a mistake and what the rule is, apologize that "I know it sucks, but that's the rules".

And that's how they learn.

Eventually these players will catch on and usually give in to the tipping culture. Also, I've seen dealers be super strict on a low limit game on some trivial rule in order to appease to the crabby rules police regs. I don't think it's always about the tips though. Sometimes, especially in a room with 90% regs, it can get frustrating if a new player (either new in general or new to the room) just doesn't get it. Today I paged a new player to a table. He walked in and I pointed to the table he was going to. It was an already-existing game and we were less than 10 feet from it. I pointed to it and he asked "where?" I showed him again and told him his first buy-in was at the cage. He just sat down and when my dealer told him his first buy-in was at the cage, he told her that he thought I said he could buy in at the table. He then got upset.

Then I got another typical doozy just now. 2 guys called ahead, and when they got here they were at the top of the list. I told them they were 1 and 2 and I'd page them when I had a seat. One of them then asked if they had time to get something to eat. Luckily they didn't because I had a seat within 2 minutes.

Every time I show up to work in my Patriots jersey on a day they lost, EVERY TABLE that I push into wants me defend the team. "What happened to your team today?", they want to know, as if I need to be held accountable for someone's failure.

But today was special. First hand of the night, my cackling cross-examiner delighted in hearing about the 70-yard Hook And Lateral on the last play of the game. He cackled the entire hand-- until he got rivered when both opponents caught a gutshot to chop it.

Cackler seemed stunned. I didn't have the heart to tell him that he just lost to a hook+lateral on the last play.

We did NOT get 800.

Spoiler:
it was more like 950!

I'm EXHAUSTED!

YTF .. You work at CP (977 total)? Got to work on my tournament game to get up in that area. Sattys and re-entries have helped regional poker immensely. Quite a scene to come back from vacation to ...

Both Dealers and Players want more hands per down, so the newbies get trampled at times. But sit a newbie down at 230AM when things start to thin out and watch how much patience everyone has in an effort to 'keep the game going'. GL

977 sounds about right.

As I walked past a table, someone pointed to my jersey and asked, "Hey YTF, what happened?"

"WHY DOES EVERYONE ASK *ME*??? LIKE I'M THE PUBLIC DEFENDER, OR SOMETHING!!!"

Because for the last two decades Patriots' fans have been insufferable? Just a theory.

They certainly are...but I'M not! I just wear my jersey, and congratulate teams (like Philly) who beat them.

At least, I don't MEAN to be insufferable! For example, a few years ago, a friend asked my plans to watch the AFC Championship Game. I genuinely didn't know if I was going to make any plans. It's not like there's anything special about an AFCCG, my team plays in it almost every year (Brady has played in 12 of them in "16 full years as a starter", so I don't know if that counts the year he sat out injured--and currently has a streak of attending the last SEVEN of them).

My friend was furious with me.

I used to have a decent number of football jerseys as we are allowed to wear them on game days.

I got sick of having to make a polite response to whatever unfunny stupid comment that people make when you wear a jersey of a particular player/team/etc while working so I stopped.

Wearing football jerseys starts conversations I don’t ever want to have. People will just start screaming things at you. It’s crazy.

Get a new AFL jersey, nobody will know anything to make any comments:

Sometimes you don't set out to be insufferable, it just sneaks up on you.

Somehow I expect those Jerseys will generate plenty of comments even with no team or history to attach. Maybe just me but OMG those are butt ugly. So there is at at least your first comment.

Haha seriously. As a Bills fan I think I'll be accidentally deleting ytfs next 20 posts.

The only time I wore a football jersey to work it caused an issue. It had a tear in it because it had been worn in an NFL game.

There is a difference between being a fan and a fanatic IMO. And by wearing the gear you will attract the fanatic version from both the for and against side of discussions.

In my 'youth' I was truly a NBA fanatic, now I'm barely a fan as other interests have more than taken over the brain power required for such commitment. GL

I got to use RR's "It's not a lifetime option" line the other night.

AAbout what you would imagine.

DEALER: Option?

BB: (ignores)

DEALER: (louder) Option?

BB: (won't look up from his phone)

DEALER: (starts pulling in bets) Last chance!

BB: (has that look on his face like a cartoon character hearing tweeting birds)

DEALER: (spreads flop)

BB: (snaps out of it) Hey! I didn't get to act on my option!

DEALER: It's not a lifetime option!

That's pretty funny YTF. I'm sure I'm much recreational than most of the posters here, but I'd think that'd be awesome if a dealer said that.

Btw....When I play it is usually at the Potawatomi in Milwaukee, and all the dealers there have been fine. I never see near as much drama as apparently other have, but I guess its cause I don't play as much.

On the other hand...I would've definitely been in the group of people giving you crap about the Patriots losing, so maybe I should stay away from you.

So we put out a holiday dinner buffet for the players the other night. As soon as someone mentioned it, two players promptly left the table for the free meal. One hand later, a 3rd player stood to go. I explained 3rd Man Walking, he acknowledged his 10-minute deadline, and returned with a plate of food 6 minutes later.

Ten minutes after THAT, another player asked how long the original two walkers get to be up. The answer is 30 mins.

The guy asking got upset. "You told him he had 10 minutes, and he was gone at least 20! And these guys left at least 10 minutes before him!"

To be so certain, so angry...and so WRONG...all at once. There was nothing for me to do but laugh in his face. Most of the players joined in.

He was not amused, and did not see the funny part. I started to explain how this game skews one's perception of time elapsing, but he was not interested, and interrupted me with a terse, "Look, you can CALL THE FLOOR if you have a problem with me!" It's a line I hear this guy use a lot when he thinks he's right, and when he thinks being right allows him to dispense with manners.

"No one has a problem, Joe," I told him. "I'm just trying to set you straight here--"

"I don't need YOU to set me straight!"

"All right, fine," I conceded. But just one more thing: "Would you like to know what time he left, and what time he returned? Because I noted both of these times on my wristwatch, I can tell you."

"No, I don't," and he stormed off. While this exchange was winding down, the original walkers returned, freeing Joe to go get his free dinner.

Gotta hand it to him--at least he knows to fold when he's behind.
