Do you use an avatar for Facebook too?

For me it's more about my wife's wishes and keeping my kids somewhat out of the limelight as well. She doesn't even like my 'friends of friends' setting.

Yes, I get taken down a few notches sometimes when I call in and they have no clue who I am. I figured I was talked about enough, but maybe it's just like Jerry McGuire .. back to work .. when you leave the room. GL

Hah no but my profile pic is one with me having a very shall we say extreme beard, so my avatar here probably looks more like me than my fb pic does. But my name is fairly unique, at least in the US. I'd bet I'm probably the only Dinesh playing in my room.

For me I kept them out mostly because I didn't want to deal with the degen players. At one point right around then I had a player who lived near me ask me if I would loan him money for an apartment deposit, saying he could swing by my house to pick it up (to make it easy for me I guess), and telling me I could get repayment from another guy in the room who owed it to him who I have heard is "connected" (he is also a nice enough guy, but still). I didn't want to have my worlds collide like that.

The folks I'm connected to now are basically nice people, especially the dealers, and I value being able to connect and share many things with them. but I still keep them excluded from some of the more private stuff I post for my personal friends and family.

I think I'm only FB friends with 2 players from our room. One used to deal with me and has since moved to a different casino. The other is a guy who I share a healthy # of mutual friends with from growing up near each other and the same age and rival high schools and all that. I requested another player at one time based more on mutual interests (read: the Cubs) than anything and he never accepted.

I don't think I'd turn anyone down straight out of principle, but in all the time I've been here it hasn't ever really come up. No one has ever asked me, "hey what's your last name; are you on Facebook?" A few people show up as "friends of friends" because they're friends with other people I work with, but not many.

Yeah, it really only became an issue for me because fb started recommending all sorts of players and dealers in the "People you may know" section (and I'm sure I was showing up on theirs too). I still don't really understand how, since I had literally no points of mutual contact with them. I think it probably was because we were all connected to the same wifi point and all accessing facebook at the same times. Their algorithms are really sophisticated.

I don’t accept players unless I have some kind of outside of work connection with them.

I accept coworkers, but not bosses.

I'm afraid to add co-workers at this point after one I liked turned out to be a horrible racist and others seemed to enjoy political trolling a bit too much. I had been blissfully unaware of their views before that.

Players - I'll sometimes accept a friend request but I'll drop them from my feed if I'm not getting anything out of the interaction. I don't post a whole lot myself any more.

Whether it's on social media or not I'm pretty comfortable telling people I don't want to get involved in their drama and won't loan money other than trivial amounts.

We've got a Facebook group, open only to coworkers, to advertise shifts you're looking to pick up or trade. It's awesome.

There's not one player in our room I'd be interested in friending.

There's a regular in my room who asked to friend me on Facebook. He's a friendly enough guy and I'd run into him once when I was filling my gas tank after work near the casino and we had a nice, brief chat. So I accepted his request. Then I noticed that his posts were bizarre and borderline offensive. And then I dealt a down with him at my table and pushed him 4 or 5 pots, never receiving a tip from the guy.

So I unfriended him.

For the most part, if players want to friend me I'll usually accept and if I don't like their pages I'll put them on an "ignore" setting so that I don't have to be bothered with their pages while at the same time not going through the bother of unfriending them.

Take a look at your company's social media policy people. I bet posting in this thread is against the rules in many of your workplaces.

I socialize with a few players but would never add them as friends to social media. I would never add any management or HR personnel. I had a few co-workers at one point but they've moved on so I don't mind, wouldn't add any new ones. We have a facebook group for shift swaps that I suspect is a little more reliable than our in house system in a pinch, but I have enough seniority that I don't need it.

Can't see how anonymous posting here would be considered "social media".

Doesn't 2+2 say cardroom employees have to be either anonymous or paid sponsors of the site?

Anyway though, I just didn't think 2+2 was considered to be "social media".

By not anonymous I mean some posters identities are known by some people. Some people have posted information which identifies them even though they are posting under a pseudonym.

From a management standpoint, I recommend not being friends on FB with anyone you work with unless they are someone you hang out with away from work. I've seen a few too many people get in a bind because someone they work with reported something they saw on FB to HR as something inappropriate in a deliberate attempt to get them in trouble.

Or better yet: live your life in a way where you don't say, do, or post things that others would have a problem with.

Howard Stern was just talking about this yesterday. Said he's on vacation, chilling on a beach, and a stranger strikes up a conversation with him. Howard thinks this guy is pretty cool, they chat for a long time before parting ways. Later, Howard learns the guy is a reporter for the NY Daily News.

Howard was horrified. "What if I said something I didn't want to see in print?"

His friend Jerry Seinfeld suggested that maybe you should just be in the habit of NEVER saying such things. "That's what I do," advised Jerry. "If i said it, go ahead and print it."

The problem today is that HR departments operate upon the belief that if someone is offended .... what was said must be offensive.... If someone goes HR and says That guy said "Good Morning to me and I feel its inappropriate and it makes me uncomfortable" .... HR doesn't say "what the **** is wrong with you.... he was being pleasant when he said 'Good Morning.'"

Interesting. I would have assumed Howard Stern was so shameless, or more importantly in such a position to monetize literally anything controversial, that he'd assume anything ending up in print is just fine. I wonder if his comment was just fake horror over learning the guy was from the NYDN or maybe a setup line for Seinfeld.

A lot of people hear the name "Howard Stern" and think of the guy who was on tv in the 90s, putting naked ladies on the radio.

He's not that guy any more.

(He never was, really--naked chicks was a small part of the radio show, but a HUGE part of the E! tv show.)

Got my first paycheck a week or so ago. We use an app instead of paper checks (I think other casinos do this as well). So you look on the app to see your earnings, deductions, taxes, etc. Does anybody have any idea what it means under "Earnings" that says "Tip Rate Tips". It's also under deductions.

So say it says in earnings Tip Rate Tips 250$, in deductions it says 250$ for Tip Rate Tips. So it nullifies it.

Is this my tournament downs or something? They give us cash at the casino but I didn't know it was taxed if that's what it is.

Sounds like that’s what you are getting taxed on every week. Each casino may have a different name and different amount. If you make $400 in tips in a week, you are getting taxed on only $250 of it.

It sounds like your casino has a compliance agreement with the IRS. It means you don't have to count and declare the exact amount you get in tips each day. Instead, they assume a certain amount per hour and tax you on that amount.

My room does it the same way just with a different name for the tips. They take our base pay, add the compliance rate, calculate the tax withholding, then take the rate back out. It looks weird but it's just their way of accounting for the assumed $250 you took home in cash tips during that period.

You usually get the option to opt out of that compliance agreement if you don't think you will make that much but then you open yourself up to a tax audit in the future. Usually the number they use is well below what you should be making so it's in your interest to just let it happen.

This sounds like what it is. They don't count my tips but they tax me as in I'm making $11 an hour, my hourly wage is less than that. So I'm assuming this is just how they work around getting me taxed for the $11 an hour.

Incidentally, one of the reasons I accepted my current position is because we do compliance instead of counting the actual amount. I take home cash that night and my tax bill is reduced.

I do track my tips just in case I need that number in the future if I'm trying to demonstrate income or if I just want to look back and see how I'm doing. There are a bunch of free or cheap apps for this now, I use something called "Work Log"
