Before the poker boom I was playing in an Indian Casino back east. There is a big commotion at another table ($3-$6 limit Holdem) one of the regular players is ranting and raving about how she has played poker in rooms all across the country and she has never heard of such a ridiculous rule and the staff here has no idea about the rules of poker ...

So what happened?

Well apparently she got to showdown against another player and there was a flush on the board. But here opponent held a card of the suit that was high enough to play so he had the higher flush .... but according to her in every other cardroom in the country if there is a flush on the board ... its a split pot ..... And she was arguing loud enough for everyone to hear....

Lol I’ve had that one before too. “But we both have flushes! We split the pot!”

Maybe the same as this, but I really have never heard of other rooms doing it differently... In your room, when a player has missed only their small blind and they post, is that small blind dead or live?

My room allows you to post the small blind on the button ... Dead.

In my room you can post the SB after the button passes and it is live. Most everywhere else I've been you have to wait for the button to pass and it's dead.

I played in one room where you can post the SB on the button and it was live. There were several regulars who simply skipped the SB every time so they could play it from the button instead. One would always pretend to have an important phone call to make at that moment. The blinds were $2/3.

I've occasionally seen dealers at Aria allow someone to post their SB between the button and actual SB, so you'd have B SB SB BB. I don't know if this is actually in their rules or something they brought from another room. This seems optimal to me but it's definitely not widespread.

In my room you can post a missed small blind in any position except the button and it’s live.

That is indeed the room most people here cite. They search their brain for another example but rarely find one.

It used to be the rule for WSOP tournaments but they changed it several years ago.

I was dealing 2-4 limit and the guy on the button bet $4 on the turn only to be raised to $8.

Button: He can't do that!
Me: Do what?
Button: He can't check raise!
Me: Why not?
Button: Well you're not allowed to do that in prison!

In my room we have a forward moving button, so by the time he came back it would be past him. The small blind is dead money.

In not all, but most cases - the players want that player in the game next anyway. There are times when someone on the list will have a “live one” behind them (not top tier) and prefer to be rolled to the end of the list.

In their mind, no use paying the rake / risking your ‘roll if the game is missing the preferred player.

Again, not everyone feels this way. But those that look at their bottom line... (Casino, regs, ...) they want that top tier player to skip the line and feel pretty and special at all times.

That's a bit common here in some Vegas rooms.

This is utter BS based on an erroneous assumption that the set of "live ones" coincides with the set of upper tier card holders. It simply isn't true.

Foxwoods has this rule, too.

Have never seen a SB posted live, always in the middle ... I'll act less shocked

It is interesting the 'unlimited' straddle. I saw it once where the guy knew exactly what he had and put out 52% of his stack ... just enough so action wasn't reopened when he jammed and he ended up with a 5x pot! I guess having the 'option' is enough, you don't necessarily have to be able to reopen the betting at a 50% clip (I know Bolt's room I think). GL

I guess it isn't the same then as I see many rooms do it differently.

In the B-SB-SB-BB scenario which of the SB's gets the button for the next hand? I assume it's the second one

Overheard in a card room, during the worst snowstorm this area has seen in decades:

PLAYER 1: You didn't go to temple today?

PLAYER 2: Are you crazy? The roads are awful out there!

YTF: LOL.

BOTH PLAYERS: (don't see what's funny)

Do any rooms still give players pagers for when they're called? What a nightmare that used to be. I also can't remember the last time I saw a side table for drinks/ashtrays but bet they're still pretty common in some markets.

Most of the rooms in my area have side tables for drinks and at least one room still has pagers.

Button skips over the guy that posted his live small between the actual SB and BB, so yes the second.

+1 for SoCal here too; only 1 has pagers out of the few places I play also.

SoCal here too. We also have side tables. Nothing better than trying to push in/out of a game only to have 5 off those things blocking the way...

I exist in side table hell.

Guess which game is the worst about it?

There's no need to guess.
