When I told the story at a poker table full of players, I was met with a lot of blank stares at that point in the story. I had paused briefly to let the question sink in, because when a question like that comes out of nowhere, it takes a few seconds to switch over to the part of the brain necessary to comprehend and untangle it.

After a moment, one listener blurted out the answer before I revealed Jay's response. Anotherr quickly seconded that number.

But no one else at the table looked like they knew how to even begin the process of figuring out something like that. They were just there to play big cards and fold small cards, and think that made them an expert at this game.

I think poker players would do far better than 10%. But picture the folks replying to an ad for a near-min-wage job, No Experience Necessary. You nail this question, and you go straight to the head of that class.

I've recently switched to not announcing anything, any time I think I can get away with it. It really helps with the "They're tuning me out!" problem.

I worked a couple of Day shifts this week. It had been years. Days used to suck. I LOVED IT.

Back in the day, it was stud games for quarters on Day shift, the action (and tokes) picked up at night. Now the tokes are BETTER on Days???

The room was packed with folks who just wanted to play cards. They didn't care if they won or lost. Their egos didn't bruise if they lost a pot. They didn't feel the need to put down others to feel better about themselves. They were just hanging out, playing cards. Having fun. Genuine conversations--they actually LISTENED to each other!

When did THIS happen??? And why did no one tell me?????

I've heard this from a few others. I have a theory though. I suspect that much of this is just the newness factor. If you keep dealing day shift the day players will wear on you. It's like their is a honeymoon period when you switch shifts.

Makes sense. I work in an office and I'm certainly not surrounded by geniuses...but they are all literate, numerate, able to operate software, answer a customer professionally, hold down a job etc. etc. So I tend to think of these people as average, but in reality, they're in the smarter half of the population. Down near the shallow end of the gene pool, it's surprising what people can't do.

Anything different can be refreshing.

I've spent the last few weeks reading over this thread. I'm trying to become a dealer and I've learned a lot from this thread. I have a friend that's a dealer that's been giving me lessons. There's a poker room close to my house that I want to apply for soon. Omaha is part of the audition. Any suggestions for practice calculating plo pots? Any other tips for passing an audition? What are common mistakes I should try to avoid? Is there anything that's an automatic fail?

YTF - I love the casino where you had your first sportsbook job. I used to play bingo there with my grandma and that's where I learned to play blackjack and poker. It may not be the nicest place, but it's fun. It adds so much to your stories to picture them there.

Having a bad attitude can be an automatic fail. I always recommend that going in you be nice to EVERYONE you come across, even those you are auditioning against. Don't freak out when you make a mistake, just stay calm, back it up, and make it right.

If you play poker you can sit down and practice calculating pots when you aren't in a hand. You don't have to be playing PLO, any game will work. Every bet someone makes calculate what pot would be. If there hasn't been any bets yet this round pot is whatever is already in the pot, if someone bets it's almost always 3x that bet plus everything that went in before.

Its helpful if you don't think of it as auditioning against other people. You do your audition ... You do the best you can do.

Don't try to impress anybody. Calm down, remember to breathe, and take your time. Trying to go too fast will only cause more mistakes.

Also this. I've written off several applicants before they even deal a hand.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Friendliness is a key part of my current job, but I need to work on looking relaxed and pleasant while I'm concentrating. The room is short staffed so I'll be evaluated on my skill and won't be competing with anyone else, so that's one less thing to worry about.

I'm going to sit in the 4/8 O8 game and rail the PLO this week. After that I'll turn in my application.

When for years you try to get a job at a certain property, but one of the hardest ones to get in. After a while finally get referred and an opportunity, but the nerve wrecking sensation that you'll flunk interviews, auditions and group get togethers. 😩😩

Tonight had a problematic female player kept calling me "pretty boy dealer"....

"Pretty boy dealer puts out the worst flops, this guy..."
"See, that's how pretty boy deals..."
"No lo with pretty boy in the box...."
"Pretty boy is here? Deal me out, pretty boy...."

The list goes on.

Then I find out she's a dealer at Bellagio.

How do you do that to a fellow dealer?

Some of the worst behavior I've seen at the tables has been from off duty dealers.

Terrible behavior. You would expect more from a fellow dealer.

This is so unfortunately true, but on the other hand, the ones that aren't are usually really great for the game. It really is insane how bad it can get though with a few of the bad apples.

When I play, I'm very friendly and tip big. I also have the dealers back in any situation where a dealer is getting picked on.

I just don't understand how another dealer could be a piece of trash to another dealer.
