Player showed up shortly after floor did. Hand was still live. I told player not to do that again ... he seemed confused. I think he left something at another table and was looking for it since he later asked about a lost and found.

No kidding...I've been averaging about 6 hr shifts the last three months with at least 4 breaks. Our room is slowly dying and very over staffed.

I'd call, too. Why stand outside when I can sit inside?

Our computerized list system went down for the count tonight, for the first time in years. Total chaos. Management/floors haven't been in the business long enough to know how to work a paper list.

I offered to show them what to do in exchange for a weekend off & an EO once I was done.

I smell a new "reminder of proper procedure" memo tomorrow

That's funny. I can totally see that happening.

I like to make fun of the suits too.... but isn't it more likely their difficulty came not from not knowing how to work a paper list (I suspect only a few of my coworkers couldn't operate pen and paper) but dealing with recreating whatever existing list they lost.

My gf is a 911 dispatcher (don't say operator!). I've been to her workplace, she is surrounded by SEVEN large computer monitors in her cubicle (which is not cube-shaped, for obvious reasons).

During a storm the other night, she texted me, "internet is down. We are down to pencil and paper."

There are a lot of folks who play and work in the poker room, who need to be reminded that no one's life is on the line here. I've had to learn to come home and NOT vent about a poker player being difficult.

You're allowed to vent though. I mean, you can look at it in relative terms to make your logical brain not let the stress and negative emotions build up so much, but feelings are feelings. Bottling your problems up just because someone else somewhere has a much harsher situation sounds very unhealthy.

I mean, if my significant other wasn't "there for me" because she doesn't feel my need for emotional outlet is valid because she feels that hers is that much more important, then **** that lol.

ME: This old guy we got, drives me nuts. Today, he wanted to check by loudly banging a chip on the dealer button. But he wasn't sitting near the button. He reached halfway across the table, and HAMMERED it. The button flew three feet. Now I have to chase it down and put it back, but I'm not sure where it was, and now the game is stopped so I can piece this back together--

HER: I had a lady call me today when she found her son had hanged himself.

ME: Yeah. I'll shut up now.

Does anyone else have this condition or is it just me? I'm pitching cards and as I'm giving everyone their 2nd card in hold 'em, my aim is just a bit off and the card meant for seat 3 lands right on top of seat 4's card. And this is where my brain decides to shut off my ability to speak. So instead of just saying "the top card should go over to him" what I end up doing is freezing and then sort of gesturing with my hands and occasionally some grunting. I never have this sort of problem with any other part of my job, or my life for that matter. But when I can see that one of the players might look at someone else's card because of my shoddy pitching, the best I can do is point wildly and say "Uh Uh Uh".

I'm sure this is totally common, right?

It's because your brain is several steps ahead and it literally freezes/jams.

Your muscle memory/synapses are already on seat 7 or 8 by the time your other synapses have relayed the message that seat 3/4s cards are off. This causes a glitch in the matrix and you sit deer in the headlights for a few seconds.

We are a small enough room that although this was a problem it was fairly easily handled (accurate enough that only the usual suspects chirped, but they would've found something else if the lit hadn't gone down). If it was a weekend or during a tournament series , that'd be a different story!

Your subconscious (auto pilot part of your brain) is pitching. Your conscious brain is trying to speak. It's not easy/natural to toggle between the two. That's why people suck at driving while on their phones (lol at laws that mandate hands-free phones while driving, as if THAT were the problem)...and why I need to Shut Up And Deal to avoid horrible dealing errors.

Thank God I was off last night. When the guy on the next bar stool and the bartender got on their political soapboxes, I was free to leave them and find another bar. If I were dealing, trapped with idiot poker players with idiot opinions, I'm sure I would have been miserable all night.

I have suggested to players that politics are not good poker table discussions

I'm fortunate to be allowed to snuff that stuff out before it really gets started with a no religion/no politics rule.

A manager asked me what I thought of a no politics rule once. I think it's horrible as a rule because everything is political.

I prefer to just try to guide the discussion to things that are more fun.

A few Friday things:

It's like there was a competition to see who could say the stupidest **** at the table today in the wake of the tragedy in Dallas.

If you hit a jackpot last year at our sister casino last year for 15 large and you tried to write off on your taxes with no documentation and are now being audited, don't expect the poker room to magically be able to come up with records helping you prove losses the following July.

According to Best Floor We Got, it is acceptable for me to take the first seat change button for myself and keep it in front of my dealing tray.

That *is* a good floor.

I was mercifully off tonight, too. I hope everyone gets Dallas out of their system before I return tomorrow.

which table games earn dealers the most tips? Is it craps or blackjack? Also is it true mostly women are hired for BJ?

I've never dealt table games but I understand that most casinos employ a tip pool for all table games so your pay should be the same no matter what.

As far as female dealers, why not just visit a room you're interested in, take a head count, and draw your own conclusion...

Tu.. also if you wouldn't mind enlightening me once hired how often is a employee drug tested I know they do it at the initial hiring which wont be an issue, but what about down the road if I cant hold my resolve. I live in Vegas btw if that alters the answer any(and yes people I know just don't do drugs) humor me.

Generally, I say no. There may be places out there that will pick a good looking woman over a equally skilled male though.

Varies by place. I think standard is you get tested at hire and then randoms are possible anytime. This usually is only ever used if they suspect something or if you have an accident of some kind. It isn't really random.
