It's been said countless times before, but if you want to get a dealing job go to places you want to work and ask how they get their dealers. Then pursue that route.

I'm dealing a full game with a list, when suddenly, five players decide to rack up and quit at once. The podium's view of this table is blocked by a huge pillar,so I have to be right on top of the Bravo system so he knows exactly how many seats I've got, because players get upset when they're called to a game that's already full.

The new players straggle in one at a time, and some want to be dealt in right away, before their chips arrive, so besides the Bravo thing, I'm also keeping up with IOU's.

I pitch the cards, start the action, and let the players fold around to the blinds while I swipe in two more players, when this happens:

BB: Chop?

SB: Sure!

Player Not In Hand: They can't chop! The SB on the button folded!

(This is correct, no chopping when the ridiculous forward-moving button rule calls for more than one blind. We had all forgotten that the button owed a blind, even though i had announced it while pitching, because the button was still waiting for his chips to arrive, so his SB was not posted.)

BB: Oh, right. I had forgotten he was in there.

SB: Me too.

YTF: Me too!

PNIH: (smugly) At least **I'm** paying attention.

YTF: (feeling called out) You mean, "At least **I'm** not being distracted by swiping seven players in and out, who owes what to whom, and invisible blinds on the button."

PNIH: (defensively) No no, I didn't mean it that way. But I HAD to say something! What if you had let them chop, then we later realized the button owed a SB? What then?

(The "What then?" made it clear that he wasn't asking rhetorically, he was waiting for an answer. And his tone made it clear that this was a very important question.)

YTF: Um...the ceiling would have caved in? (shrugs, shakes head )

(Everyone laughs, even PNIH,who apologizes for being such a nit, says he can't help it, it's his nature.)

YTF: I guess we'd let 'em chop it three ways. There would be nothing else for me to do but sit back, and wait and see who would object to that--but I guess we've found the answer to that one, right?

I thought SOMETHING must have just ended when they all quit at once, but nope. It was 6 pm exactly and they were all old guys, they must have all separately decided
that they'd stay until 6.

You can drop a $2 rake without putting $2 chips in play.

Well you're not wrong for saying that but the floor will rattle my cage about rake not being colored up. I only have 50 in whites and 200 in blue in the well so if I ignored the blue I'd be calling for fills more often than I already do. Also in the room I work at getting a fill is hard enough if I'm in the back half of the room so I'm not gonna make things more difficult.

Yes, but you can't get a $2 chip as a toke unless you put it in play first.

I didn't say don't use the $2. We have $4 chips for the rake but they don't go in the players hands

Well if they stopped putting the $2 chips into play they could have more white in the rack and less $2 chips. And why the hell do they only have $250 in small chips in the rack. I'm not criticizing the dealers .... it makes no sense for one dealer to do things differently then the others ..... this is a management issue...... so the amount of white in the rack is not an issue because when management fixs the issue they can change how much they put in the rack.

Nit of the week award:

Heads up on the turn in a $1-$2 NL game. Player in seat 3 makes a bet (more than his opponent in seat 1 had left) Seat 1 calls and is all in. Player in seat 3 chucks his cards out intio the betting area face up. He has a J 10 which does not pair the board. I put up the river and the J 10 has not improved the player is simply playing a J 10 no pair, no straight, no flush.....

So now the player in seat one points to his opponents cards and starts saying "He folded. .... He threw his cards in" I tell the player the action was over the player wasn;t facing a bet and he tables his hand.... He is adamant that his opponent folded..... But he relents just before I'm about to call the floor for a ruling on this ridiculousness.... and he flips up a K Q for the win ..... I guess he would rather have try to win the pot by having his opponent's hand ruled dead then to simply show his winning hand....

Two players privately share a laugh. One turns to me and asks:

HER: Do you know who Mike from Breaking Bad is?

ME: Sure! I love that show!

HER: (points to other laugher) He thinks you look like him.

ME: Yeah, I can see that...the shaved head, the whiskers...always looking like I'm perpetually tired and annoyed...

(A few snickers)

ME: ...that's how I always look WHEN I'M HERE!

(whole table laughs)

Why do some places deal 10 handed and why do some places deal 9 handed? What are the pros and cons and why do some lean one way or the other?

I had a player ask me tonight and I didn't have a really good answer for him other than my assumption that 9 handed tables result in more tables, create more rake, and as a slight plus, make the room seem fuller. I could be way off though.

Some players prefer 9 handed because of game play reasons. Some prefer them for comfort reasons. Some prefer 10 handed for game play reasons.

The reason a room chooses 9 or 10 handed (and I have even played in a room that sat 11 to a table on a regular basis) is a combination of the issues you mention as well as a player preferences.

I ahve worked and played in rooms that were 9 and rooms that were 10. There are benefits to each. While playing 9 handed games may get you an extra game going, they also tend to get short faster and this leads to player complaints, rake reductions, and games breaking faster.
