I've had players tell me someone has been gone for the last 3 dealers and the dealer at the table says, "actually he was here when i tapped in"...

What's even better is that they are complaining while there is an open seat and no list

"We need some players over here!"

"You say that like I've got some in a closet somewhere, and would have fetched them if only I had been paying enough attention to notice we have four empty seats!"

The fact that you think this odd is testament to how well run your room must be. In some of the rooms I've played in the desk doesn't always pay attention to when seats open up. I've been at tables where seats have been open for awhile before someone realizes there's a list. There have been times when I've been next on the list and just happen to notice an empty seat at the table I've been waiting for.

What do you guys do to stop everyone from acting in scenarios such as players cascade-folding-out-of-turn or when you see someone is about to expose their hand when action is still pending (even if it's just $5 more to call or w/e)?

I used to say "Hold on" but I've found that recently "Time Out" gets everyone to instantly stop what they're doing. "STOP" feels too harsh but I'll do it if no one is listening at all.

If just one person does it, I will use a very gentle "Hold on guys, action is here" while trying to hold my hand up towards the player after the guy who just acted OOT.

If the waterfall starts, I don't hold back. "Woah guys! Hold up! We are STILL back here!". I don't give two ****s about coming across as mean/harsh at that point. Of course, it's always meant with "Well, I was just following him!"

"Hold on, let me double check to make sure he didn't raise you".

Something like that.

I usually hold up my hand as well ... but one problem I have noticed is that after I get the action stopped. If I bring my hand down ... they all start up again as though that means everybody go back to acting out of turn.

Aria Poker Room made the following video to promote their Seniors tournament. Pretty amusing and thought people here might agree.

Watch it to the end for the best part.

$4-$8 holdem game. On the River its seat 1,2, and 10. Seat 10 has the button.

Seat 1 checks. Seat 2 bets. Seat 10 calls. Seat 1 comes out and sets out 3 stacks of 4 chips. Has the 3 stak gets cut out I announce "Raise". Player in seat 1 grabs back the extra 4 chips and says "I didn't raise." I tell him once he set out teh extra 4 chips he was bound to a raise. Seat 1 says I didn't raise. Seat 2 says "he didn't raise -- you said raise".

I call the floor. Floor gets there and i tell the story. Now both Seats 1 and 2 are claiming I made a mistake and that I announced the raise. At first I think they are just outright lying claiming I announced a raise and that seat 1 was just calling. Then I realize thats not what they are saying. They seem to be saying seat 1 was calling and I arbitrarily announced his action as a raise.

Floor rules its a raise. Seat 1 and 2 argue Floor stands there and demands seat 1 put out 8 more chips to complete his raise. He eventually does so. Seat 2 calls. Seat 10 now in anaction with looks like he is calling pushes out 2 stacks of 6 chips. Thats an extra 4 chips so I announce a raise and tell him he needs to complete it. Seat 1 relunctantly calls and seat 2 calls.

Seat 1 and 2 still have not stopped complaining about the decision. The floor is still standing there.

Seat 1 and seat 10 have straights and seat 1 takes the pot with a flush. The ruling made him an extra $32 ....

and

He is still arguing with the floor as he stacks the chips.

It is horrible when a fight breaks out in your room. I am no longer in the business, but these things do not happen in a vacuum.

Because it happened in a card room and it is breakroom worthy. Please share anything like this here anytime.

Player asks to change seats from the 2 seat to the 6 seat. I tell him he can move but he will have to post or wait for the BB because he is moving away from the button by more than 2 positions. He moves and informs me that he doesn't have to post because the 4 seat is not at the table. I explain that our rule is we count that player as being present unless he he has a missed blind button.

Well the player is certain I am wrong. and wants a floor. Ok fine. This one is a no brainer .... this has been our rule for many years (I do remember that it wasn't always the rule .... but its been a long time). Floor comes and seems confused ..... he consults with another floor and rules that the player doesn;t have to post.

Well now the guy is busting my balls. "I don't even work here and I know the rules", "Its not about the money, its about the dealers knowing the rules." etc etc etc. Only the floor is still hanging around and he gets in my ear and tells me that he just didn't want to hold up the game while they checked on the rule.

Well about hands later the floor comes back over and addresses the table. The dealer was correct, unless the player has a missed blind button an absent player is counted (they aren't making the guy post but they are clarifying the rule for when it comes up again).

Well of course the guy who was giving me a hard time can't possibly apologize, instead we get "Well, I have never heard of that rule."

So I looked at him and said "Don't worry about it, its not your fault ... after all I had an unfair advantage .... unlike you . . . I've actually read the rulebook."

ME: You've got a funny way of apologizing.

One of our long-time $3-6 players stepped up to the $6-12 game the other night. His face betrayed that he was positively shocked at that hands shown by folks who called two bets cold preflop. I guess all those years at $3-6, he was imagining that if he played a bigger game, folks would respect pre-flop raises more. And when that didn't happen, he was clearly questioning if he knew ANYTHING about how the world worked.
