Starting to really irk me so I keep my head down and ignore him.
Cocktail waitress makes her way near our table and I catch him shaking his head to her to not come by. He doesn't say a word, but I observe him basically tell the waitress to not take any orders at our table and she walks away. I shout "Can I get a coke". She either doesn't hear me or ignores me and walks on.
By this time, the dealer realizes I wanted a drink and he says to me "i'm sorry, I'll flag her down for you". I said "No, I'll get it myself." He said he would get her. I said "no, you clearly didn't want her over here since you told her to not come by. I can get it myself. I need to use the restroom anyway."
Coming back from the restroom I stop to get myself a coke from the self-serve station outside the poker room. He is coming on break. He attempts to apologize to me, but instead of getting angry with him, I tell him this "Look at it this way...the slower you deal, the less chance I have to win a pot...and the less chance YOU have to get a tip." He then says "After 7 hands, I said, why even try to be speedy for these guys". I said again, "Well, I'm trying to get unstuck, and you know I tip. Why not hurry to get as many hands as possible so I CAN tip you?"
Not really sure he got the point, but I said my peace respectfully. Next time, I'm not so sure I will be so considerate.
If I ever notice a dealer slowing down because he is not getting tipped while I'm on the floor that is an instant counseling. If a dealer is not dealing to the best of his ability and especially if he is dealing slower than he normally would then he is essentially stealing hands from the players and drop from the house.
One of my young dealers (who no longer works for me) that was about 6 months out of school came up to the poker podium before going on break. He sets his toke box down and says to another dealer very casually "nobody was tipping so I just starting taking my time, relaxing, and just floating the cards to the players." I was standing at the podium at the time so you can guess one of the reasons that he no longer works for me.
