My response to this question when appropriate is "No but it's never too late I always say!"

Some rooms have a rule requiring their dealers to lie to customers who want to be his tippers, thereby turning them into bad tippers? What a terrible rule, can't imagine the justification for this.

When I started dealing 90% of the time a player asked they knew they didn't and had no intention of giving one. If you said no they'd launch into their prepared speeches about why, or if you said yes they'd call you out and then start their prepared speeches. I think that type of player is rarer today.

I'd love to see the language of the rule ... 'Technically' a Dealer is not soliciting a tip by simply answering the 'did I' question with a yes or no answer. Yes, the implication of answering 'no' might be that one may be expected. But when the offering party is initiating the conversation to verify 'past' actions ...

(Bar Guy) ... "Did I pay you something for last night?"
(Bar Girl) ... "No"
(Door breaks down) ... "Miss, you're under arrest for solicitation."

So it's better for her to say "Yes" in that spot so she doesn't get caught for solicitation? ... even though she didn't get paid. GL

To the guy who hopes he's allowed to ask:

Some players will tell me to "remind" them if they forget. They know they sometimes forget, and the stiff is never intentional.

I don't *want* to solicit tips, rules or no rules...but I'm not above saying, "Hey, remember that thing you wanted me to remind you?"

Oh I’m completely out of line when I lose control and yes I’m the scum I hate. (I have that amount of self awareness at least.) I lose my temper in other situations as well. This has always been an issue for me. When it happens (and it’s a very rare occurrence) I always apologize for my actions. No it doesn’t make it better or show that I’m better than others out there. But they deserve my apology and I don’t expect anything in return.

But I love the game. And I can roll with the punches. When I feel the stress of my life affecting my game in the ways I mentioned, I take a break (like I’m currently doing).

I realized too late that what I wrote was idiotic. I wrote a response to YTF's comment. I do realize that I'm one of the scum. I've tried very hard my whole life to control my temper. When I lose control in the ways I mention, I realize I need to take a break.

The last situation I wrote about was the most troubling though as I didn't consciously think "I'm going to yell at the dealer". It just...happened. And I was rather shocked when it did.

They view replying "no" as a solicitation of a tip which is against the rules in almost every casino and poker room. I understand it's a very liberal interpretation of that rule, but that's the justification.

How about the opposite? I was on a cruise with some absolute beginners, like didn't know hand values, but they wanted to have fun. One won his first pot of $100 and asked how much should he tip. Nobody said anything for a few seconds so he tipped the dealer $30.

id just pick something in the middle, its only $100 but hes clueless, but i dont wanna appear cheap, so id say tip $5. even tho for that size of pot i myself would tip $1 lol

I had to quit a job once, because the casino was undergoing a renovation, and the poker players were driven away by the noise of hammers and power tools. We couldn't spread enough games to feed all the dealers we had, and I couldn't stick it out, got hired on down the road.

My current place is renovating right now, but this time it's different: we're the only game in town, so the players still come in, we still have plenty of games, but they are miserable! Construction noise hasn't been an issue...but we're doing things like moving KITCHENS around, so F+B service has been an adventure (and as we all know, poker players can't stand "adventure" when they want to order a coffee).

So instead of an empty room, I have a roomful of grumpy players.

Only a couple more weeks of this, I'm told...but if you've ever seen The Money Pit, you know "Two weeks!" is the contractors' mantra.

Tournament Reg didn't see there was a 3rd player in the hand, called an all-in and turbo-showed his cards with action still pending. Instant penalty. He knew it. I knew it. Everyone at the table knew it. He was already getting up to leave the table to serve it when I called the TD over. Since it was just a formality I had some fun letting the TD what had happened, complete with official hand signals.

"Personal Foul! Premature exposure. Seat 8. One round. Still 500-1000."

I'll let you all imagine the NFL signals for premature exposure.

EDIT TO ADD: ...except the mandatory penalty part. I'd never give a penalty where a warning would suffice.

Speaking of which!...

Just last night, as I lamented for the 1,000,000th time about players hiding their cards/stacks with their hands, I finally came up with the perfect way to describe to people why they shouldn't do it: It's "unsportsmanlike conduct".

It really is.

Why can't we sell it that way?

yup, another title, another round of taking **** for me...

The players know me as "the Boston guy" (doesn't *everyone* in America know a Boston guy?), and the local team here has never won a Super Bowl, despite fielding plenty of teams who were good enough to pull it off--so the jealousy is palpable, and they quickly contrast my experience as a fan to theirs. IOW, they need to make it about themselves.

I've always gotten chuckles and groans with the line, "Hey, I'd be *delighted* to see you guys get one...I don't *need* a SIXTH."

But when it came up the other night, I had to update it to "seventh", and it got a much bigger laugh than it ever had.

"Seven" is a funny number, I guess. I'm reminded that on the show Deadwood, there was a very vulger joke that had the word "seven" in it, and on the DVD extras, someone mentioned, "We tried that line with all kinds of numbers, but 'seven' was just the funniest."

Related: A few days after this most recent Super Bowl, I went on vacation to one of those resorts where you never leave the property, you just drink all day by the pool or on the beach, surrounded by American tourists. The small talk with the other couples is always the same: where you from, how long you been here, when do you leave--and that's it, we're out of things to talk about.

The only respite from that is if they're wearing a cap or something with a sports logo on it. Now you can talk about their team.

I deliberately left all my Patriots stuff at home this trip. I'm sick of being the bad guy.

A friend hosts a *raucous* Super Bowl party each year, it's really a highlight of the year for me--but I take SO much crap when the Pats are in the game, I can't even enjoy watching my team play in a SB. My girlfriend pleaded with me this season, "Let's *not* go that party this year! Let's just stay home and watch the game in peace and quiet."

She's right, but I *love* that party. So I made a plan: We spend the afternoon there...but if the Pats are playing, we duck out and get home in time for kickoff.

It went splendidly! We had all the food and booze, talked football with friends all day...and as kickoff approached, and folks started boozing, and feeling freer to give us ****, we slipped out and *enjoyed* the game.

It's not just jerks who this to us, it's EVERYONE. One lady arrived at the party, all smiles, delighted to see everyone--and then her eyes landed on us in our Patriots jerseys. The smile fell from her face, and she lamented, "Oh...I forgot about you two."

I felt about two inches tall. I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO DESERVE THIS! I don't run my mouth AT ALL. I'm not even that into football any more!!!

Had a similar experience last trip to Vegas at the BJ table. Minding my own business. Random guy starts talking $#@* to me about the Pats. I made the egregious error of wearing my Pats hat in public. Long and short I ignored him and left. And this was after only 4, can't imagine what 6 will bring...
